Who said anything about free? Nobody gives out free map updates. Crutchfield never told me there were free updates. The only thing was I was mistakenly told the 6140 had an SD slot. It doesn't but honestly I can just update with a DVD just fine. No lifetime updates is fine, it isn't the end of the world. Things don't change THAT much. The 6140 is new enough that the maps will be plenty up-to-date.

My TomTom works just fine and it is going on 3 years old. I just wanted to be sure updating wouldn't be a pain. The $70 for the update sounds about right. I think that is what the TomTom was going to cost.

Should be getting my unit tomorrow... I can't wait to get this thing installed!

I'm tracking another thread on another forum about the same subject and Cruthfield had told someone that if newer maps came out within 60 days of purchase a free update would be provided (just like with the Nuvi and Zumo units). That's where I got that info. Sorry to have confused the sites.

I wonder if that is Crutchfield's guarantee though? I could see Crutchfield providing a map disc for them.

Got mine installed. I ended up with the Scoche wiring harness, Metra mounting kit (trimming was involved on the kit but that was part of the instructions). I added the Sirius tuner and iPod cable.

My advice is to make sure you use good lengths of heat shrink to wrap up your soldered wires. Also if you want to be able to play DVDs while in motion all you have to do is connect the parking wire to the ground. I did test this and it works. However I can't recommend you doing this and if you do, be well aware of the consequences of doing so and the safety hazards.

The only dash panels I removed was the passenger side panel between the dash and the door. It just popped out. I then ran the mic cord along the roof liner. I was able to stuff it up there without pulling it down and making anything loose. I then ran it along the A pillar long the door side and in through behind the glove box. The GPS and Sirius antennas are run along the front of the dash just under the windshield and behind the glove box.

The maps are a bit out of date though, even though they are 2009. At least in my area. Overall though I am happy with it.

That's a clean install. I've got wires and crap all over the place behind my D3. It's rigged to say the least.

Honestly, it really doesn't take long to do it at all. It MAYBE added 20 minutes to my install time over others I have done.

Most of my problem is I used a harness from a previous HU then I have bypass wires, multiple grounds, XM tuner wires, reverse camera stuff, Ipod hookup. It's a mess back there.

I didn't take any pictures of the space behind the HU, but it isn't all zip tied down. I know in the springtime I will be adding a back up camera. I will probably tidy things up then.

One thing I forgot to mention is that the DNX6140 has a mini usb port on the back for updates. I would buy a 6' male-to-male mini usb with a standard A usb. I am probably going to pull the HU this weekend and run it next to my ipod and usb cable. This would make updates to the unit easy with a laptop.
