It does sound like rail dust/metal particles.
I like using Iron-X (lemon scent) rub in with a soft foam waxing sponge then rinse thoroughly.
I follow up the Iron-X treatment with a Nanoskin towel or you could use a AUTOSCRUB Sponge Fine.
As stated above you need a good "lube" with the polymerized rubber. I like Glide, ONR & Ultima waterless wash
