I only need to drive 10 minutes from my house in any direction and there's no cell coverage. Service providers won't provide additional infrastructure in sparsely populated areas. During one of the many wildfires around here this past summer, we had no phone service for 4 days due to cell equipment losses.

So my question is, what is next? Any ideas?
You forgot the predecessor to the 8 track, the 4 track with the big hole in the bottom of the case for the capstan roller.
I was actually surprised the HU in my '18 Trailhawk didn't have a CD player but it has two USB ports.
So i start ripping my CD's to USB thumb drives.

A big advantage with doing that, no moving parts, no finicky CDs that have problems, no skipping and get to delete bad songs.

What to do with old HU's that don't have USB ports like my old XJ.
Luckily the HU in my XJ has an aux. stereo input jack but many don't.
Picked up one of these, it will work with an aux. stereo input or if no aux input it can use blue tooth tuned to an empty FM station.
Can select folders to play, random, etc. and even has equalizer options.

The future? Internet downloads and/or in a couple years all commercial music albums sold at stores will be on USB thumb drives.

Coverage is so spotty here in Nevada, that my ATV club invested in a SPOT for emergency use. They used it once, so far, to call in a chopper. The point I'm trying to make is why would anyone invest in a SPOT if they could just call for help with their phone?

No one ever claimed progress was fast. I'll gladly trade you half my exceptional cell service for half of your exceptionally low humidity. There's trade off's every where one chooses to live.

Now back on topic.

No one has a crystal ball so don't take my speculation as fact, no one can answer your question with fact. You asked what's next? I gave you my thoughts.

There`s an even older entertainment system. I had an uncle who had an new Chevy (55 or 56, don`t remember). It came with the optional 45 rpm record player. Lol

Yeah, forgot about those 45 record players.
Back in the day one of my buddies installed one in his '61 Chevy.
There's a good reason those things were short lived, seemed to work ok only if the vehicle was not moving.

Progress can get to be expensive for the consumer.
I've got tons of now obsolete audio/video; music cassettes, VHS tapes, SVHS tapes, a few Beta tapes, Laser discs and now soon music CDs.

People don't always realize this, but cellphone service is is not guaranteed. This is in our local paper travel section today, an Amtrak ride between L.A. and Seattle.
Does Pandora not let you download music too? Haven't used it in years. With Spotify I can download music onto my phone so I don't need cell service. Works great on airplanes or on the ATV/snowmobile and don't have service. But every year the service gets better for sled and atv (Northern WI). Almost always have service now.
