Last month. 5 mile stretch of relatively flat Interstate. Cruise control set at 70mph.

And this was 15000 miles and just a bit over a year ago on the same flat stretch of highway...

Default Poor mileage?

Okay sooo new member here👐🏼 I bought a 16 limited with the 3.5 and I’m only getting 10 to 13 mpg in town and being on the interstate with no wind going 70mph I only get 15 to 16mpg and doing 55 mph down the highway right at 18mpg just wondering if I need to check things out or not because I have friends getting better consistent mpgs with identical setups.

Also, thought about swapping in a better cold air intake and better exhaust for more HP and throughput.

Would that help MPG as well?
Air intakes and exhaust will not affect fuel economy.

Synthetic oil won’t either. The viscosity, hths, and friction reducing additives will slightly help. For instance, switching to a 0w20 will help slightly with fuel mileage during the warm-up period. And yes, you can run 0w in anything requiring 5w or 10w if you understand the sae J300 requirements. You can’t always find the hths but lower is better for economy. For ad pack, it’s really hard to differentiate between oils but the vm’s, zddp, and other additives affect friction.

@coco38 Have you checked the brakes for drag? I agree your mileage should be better than what you're getting. Other questions are:
  • what are the gear ratios?
  • Is there a "tune" in the engine?
  • Check air filter
  • Is it a 4x4?
  • tire pressure
  • What are the tires....stock, oversize.... tread?
  • Did you buy from a dealer or private party? Can you talk to the previous owner?
  • What is the mileage on the vehicle?
  • Take the VIN and look up the original window sticker to see the options "as built" and check for modifications done since.
I am sure there are other details forum members would like to know to help you out. Best of luck.

Do a wipe and relearn. The previous owner probably played heavily, so the PCM is programmed that way. Use the Adaptive cruise as much as you can and let the truck manage the fuel. This should net a 1 or 2 MPG increase.

I,ve posted on this thread over the years going back to 2012 when I bought my super crew 5.0 . Every year I make a trip from N. Cal to Oregon up hiway 5. Its 500 miles each way. My wife drives the truck and follows me in my motorhome. Speed is always about 55-60. The first few years we averaged 18-20. When I hit about 20k the mileage increased to 24. I just made the same trip again and with 32k miles on the odometer and my wife pulled into the driveway with 26.6 showing. This rapidly goes down to around 15 when I get home as most of my driving is around town. The route we take is not all flat either. There is a pretty good mountain range when entering southern Oregon for a bout 150 miles or so. I,ve got 3.55 gears. I,m not sure I can average the EPA estimate of 15 around town though. Seems like city driving just kills the average. This trip has actually turned into a little contest for us to see how high we can get the mileage .

Twin turbo 3.5 with 5* 93 Performance tune, 34" E range Ridge Grapplers, 4x4, SCREW, 3.55, 90*+ air temps. Finally got to do a little (this is round trip) partial interstate run with this setup. My city, idling, car-pool lines MPG has been like 12.5 (hand calc).

Still does okay on the interstate though. There was also some neighborhood and city street driving at the beginning/end of the trip, and some stop lights I sat through for multiple cycles idling

Here is where I stand as of 19-Sept-19. I haven't reset "Trip 1" since picking up this truck 2-Jan-19. Pleased with the fuel economy as the engine is really "just breaking-in". I can not attest to the accuracy of the computer calculation at this point as I have not done any hand calculations for fuel usage.
