Maybe but lifting it up compared to a standard tailgate it feels heavy, easier than me trying to lose 50lbs lol

 

The tailgate with step feature includes a lift assist feature to help compensate for the extra weight. The tailgate with built in step is easier to lift than the tailgate on the 2002 that I traded in.

I like the split tailgate and ramboxes on the RAM. Makes for easier loading of heavy items into the bed since you don't have the depth of the gate in front of you. Also those ramboxes a great use of storage. I think there is still enough width in the bed for 4x8 sheets of plywood too. Nice.

 

DON'T DO IT.....there is a design flaw with the step. The plastic molding falls off without any reason and if it falls off a couple of times the nubs get loose and it will just fly off on the highway on its own and that parts cost like a crazy $70 +++.....I screwed that part in and it looks hideous. I slid some 2x4's and as I was unloading sliding them off that part fell off that easy.... it is a pain in the ***, I also tried gluing the mount points with some really strong concrete adhesive, slid some 4x8's and it just came right off.....

I am telling you don't do it, add those hitch steps and call it a day or those bumper corner steps that pop in and out by kicking them. All this time (25k miles) I must have used it like twice.....

For all your excited warnings, step covers coming off isn't much of thing. When retracted, both the inner wall of the tailgate and the rear lip of the tailgate cover protrude past the step cover to protect it. I suspect issues with the step cover are due to owners not fully retracting the step, or dropping the step down onto objects. I've grabbed my cover by mistake to yank the step back out while retracting it, never had it pop off the step.

Yep I have had the steps on my last 2 trucks and never an issue. I would not own a truck without the step again, I have 31 years of construction under my belt and my knees are shot, so this makes it much easier to get in and out of the bed.

 

This. I've come across 2 of these popping off. So it does happen. But it was because of what you just said. Not fully retracted. We simply used urethane on the one's we've seen. Urethane will bond to plastic. One of the Customers has come back twice for other issues. And it's still holding strong. He's a bigger dude that's a contractor, uses the step all the time.

 

Urethane is the correct answer. Not the stuff at the auto parts store, though, that's usually too hard. Get something like Smooth-On PMC-790. Made some engine mounts (replaced the rubber in the original mounts) out of that stuff, they lasted 4x longer and were still firm when I sold the car.

 

I agree had a step on my 18 no problem. My 19 is garbage. The cover is broken can’t even put it back on know. 4 wheelers and snowmobile rip it off quite easily because it sticks out. Going to try and get it replaced under warranty or build a custom diamond plate version.
