That would make sense since the custom tunes aren't written by them.

Yup, oh and the updates also affect the programmers firmware.

I'm not sure what that means. I'm quite electronically challenged.

It's like your pc operating system, has all the basic instructions for device operation.

MPT told me directly otherwise on the phone and via email. I would tend to believe MPT as they know what they are tweaking.

I don't have any canned tunes as my XCal was from a previous truck.

Here is an email from Mike.

Hey Ryan,
I re-saved your 91 tune for you. Return to stock, check for updates on the tuner and load this. Email me back if you get the code again.
-Mike

I can't hurt anything.

We are discussing the updating of the SCTx4 programmer and I would think SCT knows more about it, they make it not MPT.

SCT isn't aware of what MPT uses from their base tune. MPT and 5* do not build their tunes from scratch.

Again, when the specific tuner that I get tunes from asks me to do updates, I do the updates.

There's nothing wrong with that, but it still does nothing for any custom tune, think about it, when you ordered the custom tunes, didn't you have to give them your pcm calibration code? So did I and so does everyone that wants a custom tune, probably a safe bet your calibration is no where near close to mine or someone else's truck.

The updates are for the device it self (bug fixes, new operating parameters as well as updates to canned tunes the device comes with) When you need a change to a custom tune you have to data log your pcm operation while you drive and send it to them for tweaking and they then send you back the updated tune.

You misread what they meant. When they said to make sure to update the device, they simply want to make sure your device is running the latest firmware as a precaution, meaning if something goes south they know exactly where to start a search to troubleshoot it.
