Standard auto paint is now around $1000 per gallon.

Unless you do all the work yourself, including paint--and can do it really well--you will probably not come out ahead on a restoration.

Top collector value is in original low mileage trucks. Also regular cab / short beds. Sure, highly modified, show quality "street rod" trucks fetch high dollar, but they always cost more to build than they sell for. Today's over priced crew cabs will saturate the used market ensuing a substantial loss on every one for years to come. A mint regular cab will be rare and fetch more. At 150,000 miles it sounds like you already got your money's worth out of your '96 regular cab. Please post pics, especially after the paint make over.

I was never disillusioned that I'd ever get top collector value, but I feel like many here are not seeing the forest for the trees. My hypothetical scenario is based on significant time. A mere 15 years ago, you could pick up a fox body mustang for less than $1000 all day long. Today they are fetching $10k-$15k with 140k-160k miles and while they are in nice shape, they're still in daily driver condition. The nicer examples reach $40-$60k. My thought on the matter is also that as vehicles, namely trucks, become more and more computerized, more complicated and built with lower quality (as is the trend), a truck like mine could easily command much greater value. I won't speculate numbers because there are too many variables (I guarantee the fox body guys had no idea this would happen lol), but that's all I'm getting at. It's just really annoying to see so many responses that simply aren't taking into account the bigger picture and only applying today's standards, which is objectively short-sighted.

But as I've said, I'm in agreement that the cost of storage is likely not enough to offset future value. At least, I'm not willing to gamble on it since the truck isn't more inherently "special". And yeah, happy to post some pics if I can remember.

Sure, and you can also paint with a roller and some exterior house paint.

I did check, and Eastwood has some auto paints for under $300 per gallon.

Sure, they made a lot. But considering the bigger picture of passing time, that matters little. From what I can see, in 96 they made 31,000 F150's. In 1969, they made 85,000 Chargers. Care to guess what a decent 69 Charger would go for?

Yeah, paying for storage doesn't usually pay off on most vehicles. Without that cost I'm sure you'll come out fine dollar wise because it's an older Regular cab and you're saving money by doing the work yourself. It sounds like you have experience and it will turn out nice. Best Wishes!

Care to explain why you removed this comment? Or did you just get trigger happy and make a mistake? BTW, as long as he doesn't start it, I won't finish it.
