Locking tailgate ?

Locking tailgate ?
I have an 07 F150 and I tried locking the tailgate with my ignition key and it did not work. Is that the key that should lock it. If so I am going to have to take it apart to see what is wrong.

Most likely an aftermarket handle and key that was installed by a previous owner. My '07 did not have a locking tailgate, and I'm not sure if any had one for these years (2004 to 2008). I got mine through Bullydog.

FYI, My 2002 had a factory locking tailgate that used the ignition key. So I'm sure it was an option. But that could be a replacement tailgate and/or handle.

Sounds like they got a replacement tailgate, after theirs was stolen.

You say "it did not work". Did the key not turn? Or did turning the key not lock the tailgate?
Yes, the key would be the same if it was from the factory. If aftermarket, then you should check on the lock for a code and see if you can figure out who made it and order a new key.

10 years old. If seldom (or never) used I could see it freezing up. As Rick inquired, did the tumbler not turn? Did it turn but not lock? If it turned but didn't lock it might be that you didn't or couldn't turn it far enough to lock.
You're probably right in that taking it apart to inspect the cause might be in your future.

I guess the higher end model F-150's got a locking tailgate handle. My STX's never did.
I can say though that Bullydog makes one, and its easy to change. For under 40 bucks on Ebay, you can get one with its own key.
Or, you can talk with a locksmith in your area to have your existing one's tumblers replaced to match your ignition key if that's the issue.
Are you sure that this tailgate lock is the original? What model F-150 do you have?
What option will be cheaper or more convenient are your choices I'd say. The Bullydog will come with its own key.
