I had thought about self tapping screws - would be easy to do. But I questioned their holding capability vs. bolt and nut since just going into the sheet metal of the top of the bed rails.

What do other folks think about a self tapping metal screws for attaching the lumber rack to the top of the truck bed rails?

Thinking about this a bit more - I have focused on attaching from the top, but I could also have self tapping screws on the inside, since the side rail of the rack is L-shaped and laps into the bed. This would have screws both in tension and shear whichever way the load was excerting. Should be plenty strong methinks.

I had to remove my liner to install the type of rack I have. Going to let it go naked for a while and get all scratched up so it's less work when I put a
spray liner in. I'm a contractor so I'm not **** about a pick up bed. I also have a roll out mat if in need to use.
In the past with different F150's and racks I attach the racks through the top rail with 3/16 x 1 2/2 lag bolts. Never had a problem. Just drill the holes a tad bit smaller so the threads grip.

I don't really like the idea of self tappers, just a suggestion. I have mine bolted on. But if the rack inserts into the bed holes then self tappers should be fine.

Thanks everyone for the excellent input. I installed the lumber rack today using 1/2 dozen 5/16" self tapping stainless lags on each side - 3 on top and 3 inside. Did cutting and welding as needed to fit with the contours and protrusions. Came out great - thanks again!

Default Rack Installation

Job Well Done, and the 1991 that only goes to the dump, I hope it is as soild mechanically as it is Bodily.

A very good looking well cared for vehicle. Probably will get 20 more years of use out of it. I hope mine looks that good in as many years.
