If they don't start doing it now, how do you expect for it to get better in the Future? An electric F150 isn't for me personally at the moment, but I have no reservations on what the future brings. Instant torque, huge power. Those Tesla's are insane. Just go to Youtube and check out tesla street racing. Id rather buy an electric truck from Ford than from Tesla.
If they can develop a battery to tow for 1200 miles before a recharge (and be a manageable size/weight), it would be game changing. That's of course not happening on the first swing.

30 years a go if you told someone you would have a smart phone that was super thin about 3"x4" you could ask a question and it would then give you an answer/directions or anything else they are capable of, you would have been locked up. I (barely) remember when my Dad brought home a new Caddy that had electric windows. Got in trouble cause we figured out how to turn the ignition on and rolled the windows up and down until the battery died....

The current automobile will continue to evolve. There will always be change. Technology marches on. Anyone think Tesla would exist not too many years ago? ALL the manufacturer's have put a bullseye on them.

Ford is doing what they believe the future will be. Whether it will be a few years or 30 years from now if you don't prepare now you won't be around to do so later. I'm afraid the general public will have little choice and either like it or ride a bike. Kind of like a manual transmission.

If you told anyone a BMW 3 series wouldn't have a manual trans option, ATX only you'd have been told to go to your room. 2019's no longer have a manual option. Can I leave my room now?

IMO it's a little easier for the older folks to understand how much things change, have changed. The younger folks don't see things the same way. This is not a put down in any way just a matter of fact. Enjoy the ride.

Idrive has it right, except that 30 years time-frame for smart phones might be closer to 15 years. I think mainstream, mass produced, electric vehicles will be out a lot quicker than that.

The first I Phone came out in 2007, the first Android phone in 2008.

There are too many errors in fact in most of the posts in this thread to respond without writing a book.

For instance, Tesla's giant battery factory near Reno will sell batteries to everyone. Show me the pollution that this factory is putting out. Not. In the world's biggest building.

f IIRC, battery production is a filthy process.

Tesla will not exist for much longer...
Wishful thinking, LOL.

The question is, how long does it take to recharge one?
Overnight is more than enough time. Out here we have motels with free electric car plug-ins.

Ford will have and the whole world will have only electric vehicles eventually. Change takes a lot of time to not only develop but to accept changes. Volkswagen and all its brands it own is interesting. They are the largest automaker in the world . Just wait to see how that whatever you want to call it (joint partnership or whatever) With Volkswagen and Ford plays out and for what vehicles it involves. Volkswagen could gobble up Ford easily. But that won't happen. Just waiting to see what technology they share and or vehicles they produce or co-produce.

I can see hybrid F-150s becoming really popular. If you can squeeze real world mpg numbers up into the mid-20s somehow, that would be incredible.

Unfortunately, mineral mining in support of electric vehicles is a severe strain on the environment. Its not so much the actual manufacturing of the batteries as it is the mining of materials used extensively in electric vehicles (or any electronics for that matter). Some previous replies were correct about the lax environmental controls that are used in underdeveloped areas where this mining takes place, and that mining produces a large quantity of poisonous and radioactive waste streams.

With that in mind, I still support the amazing benefits of electric vehicles, especially trucks and SUVs. Its inevitable that the future will bring better battery technology, or even affordable fuel cells. Moving away from fossil fuels and towards a hydrogen economy would be a great goal for society in general. It will be a tough transition away from fossil fuels, but it is a certainty that it will happen in the not-so-distant future. Maybe not our lifetimes, but I'd predict our grandchildren will be learning about internal combustion engines in their history classes. With the recent advances in autonomous driving, I doubt anyone will even need drivers licenses then...

This, it will probably have the solid state lipo's by then and will charge to 80% or 300+ non towing or 200+ miles towing in 20 min. That's two, two and a half times as long as fueling a gas truck, and that is assuming they don't just come out with a modular hot swap-able battery that takes less than two min to swap in for another 400+ miles of range. They will be competing with Tesla which is supposed to come out with a truck with 600 miles of range in the same time frame.

The moment I saw my first cheap battery powered quad copter that flew for 15-20 min I knew the energy density of batteries was right on target to displace the ICE.

For those of you that are claiming you will never own one, I would just like to thank you in advance for artificially propping up the value of my 18 3.5 screw as I move on to the next phase of transportation, an electric truck that I don't even have to sit in the front seat of. For those of you that don't think you will ever have a self driving car, i'll bet within ten years it will be so much cheaper to insure one and the autonomous lanes will be so much faster that you too will give up your horse an buggy.

Hi guys, this is the intro thread right cause that's my first post here.

Just let me drive...
Driving is my peace. I love cruising, being behind the wheel, being in control. Don't take that away from me. If the future is electric, then I guess I don't have a choice in that aspect. I'll drive gas powered as long as it's an option, though
