Default Ford to Release All-Electric F-150

Just the other day Ford announced that it intends to release an all-electric F-150 around the 2022 time-frame. What is everyone's thoughts on that? It seems the eventual transition to electric vehicles is starting to take shape, and I think Ford is trying to set the pace by releasing electric versions of their SUV and truck line.

Detroit News: https://www.detroitnews.com/story/bu...up/2597647002/

Assuming an all-electric F-150 is on-par with the performance specs of their future gas-powered models, I think a truck would benefit greatly from the instantaneous torque an electric motor provides, especially in an AWD dual motor set-up. Although I would expect any kind of towing/hauling to dramatically decrease the range on a charge. That would be the biggest downfall for me. Usually when I'm towing my toy hauler, I appreciate having a 36 gallon gas tank that can get me ~450 miles between fill-ups since I'm usually traveling across the state. Even then, at least I have gas stations readily available. The northeastern US isn't the best place to find electric charging stations on every corner...

I'm hoping Ford isn't pushing the time-frame for a 2022 release of an all-electric F-150 (if that schedule still holds a year or 2 from now), especially with the lackluster performance of current battery technology. I was initially skeptical of how an electric F-150 would be received, but seeing as how low-displacement V6s and aluminum body F-150 were widely adopted and are now mainstream options in the F-150 line, I could see this being a great evolutionary step if done correctly.

I am open to an electric F-150, but not for the 10K premium over the gas version (based on current electric vehicle premium). The current Federal ($7500) and state incentives (my state is $3500) do help with adoption, however it's only good for the first 200,000 electric units the brand sells. The credit is expiring for Tesla and GM this year and I doubt the current administration has any plans of extending it. Also combined with gas hovering around $2 right now, it's a hard sell - but who knows where gas prices will be in 2022.

If it can bring benefits without drastic cost increases (ex. EcoBoost, Aluminum Bodies) then I am not against it.

Am I the only one super excited about this? Electric is 100% the future so I'm glad Ford's getting in relatively early. I don't expect the first few models to be "worth it" for me (work/tow etc) but it's a step forward for sure!

I spend close to $6000/year on gas so if it will make sense financially, I'm down!

The question is, how long does it take to recharge one? To me that is what makes them so impractical, plus what would be the life span of the batteries, or battery, and the cost to replace it. Lots of unanswered, and important questions.

I don't think all electric is the future. I think it's the go between until the better thing comes out. Even with Tesla, I drive farther than the range of the car in a single day. Not everyday mind you, but I do it at least once a week. That range will be severely lowered by towing or carrying heavy loads.

I had a Honda Civic hybrid before my F150. I hated that car.

If IIRC, battery production is a filthy process. Also, the additional strain on power plants to meet the needs of more all electric vehicles, can't be any better for the environment.

Yep. Most lead acid batteries are produced in either China or India where there is next-to-non existant environmental legislation. Battery manufacturing produces very nasty and toxic by-products (arsenic, acids, etc.) that are often simply dumped into nearby watersheds.

The use of electric vehicles as passenger cars is detrimental to to the environment, not to mention a huge strain on a country's electrical grid.

If we all want to get serious about "saving the planet" by reducing greenhouse emissions we should all be riding bicycles

Me, I'll stick to my petro-powered propulsion for now
