I'd be interested to read a technical write up on to what extent Ford and GM developed the transmission jointly. My hunch is they collaborated on the same general principle, or strategy, on how the transmission will operate mechanically, at a high level. Then both companies split off to go about executing that strategy in their own ways. GM's bell housing is obviously different, along with a metal vs plastic pan. GM doesn't seem to have CDF drum issues or nearly as many drivability complaints as Ford owners. Ford also doesn't seem to have the best transmission program either. It pains me to say all this, but it's clear they are not the same transmissions.
