Default F150 decision

Hello all. I'm looking for a used F-150, and I was hoping I could get some tips here on perhaps a better year/engine etc. The year range I'm looking at is 97-01 (mostly for the price range), extended cab, 4x4, and I don't venture offroad much. Any suggestions in key things to look for would be greatly appreciated. I'm doing most of my browsing online, as anything local will most likely be a bit rusty (blasted NY salt). Again, feel free to chime in with any tips or areas to explore. Thanks all.....Bill

Welcome!!

As far as recommendations I think you pretty much know what you're looking for. I would recommend getting an F150 with the 5.4 liter v8 and the 4x4 like you mentioned. Are you a family man?? You mentioned an extended cab but if you have a family you would find a SuperCrew alot more roomier(sp?) than the extended cab.

I agree ^^. I have the ext cab and it's pretty much pointless for people. now maybe carrying somethings you don't want to get wet that works but that's what bed covers are for.

When you find one that you are really interested in I would write down the VIN # and take it to a Ford dealer and have them run it. This will bring up any work that has been done on the vehicle at any Ford dealership. I would also check the oil pan to make sure it is not started to rust out at all. I know this is a problem on the F250 and F350 in areas where salt is used alot in the winter time.

Thanks! The supercrew does seem like the ultimate choice <yup, 2 kids>, though the price that often goes with these trucks is usually a bunch higher. The tip on the oil pan is exactly the kind of stuff I'm looking for. Just looking for some areas, known F-150 problems, that I should be checking when looking at a used Ford. Again, thanks all.

Glad we can help man. If I were you I would def. go with the supercrew with your 2 youngens'. I know what you mean about the price being a little more expensive on the supercrews but it's well worth it and I'm sure you'll be able to find a great price on a 2001 supercrew F150.

I have a screw and two kiddos. They have to lean over to hit each other. That gives me enough time to throw my arm back there and break it up before it gets started. I love all the room in them.
