I had the Ford bed mat in my last truck…think it was around $250 or so. I too looked around at the aftermarket mats while truck was on chip hold, looking at thickness and weight to ensure it was heavy enough to stay in place at highway speeds. My two finalists were the Rough Country and Dee Zee. When I was ready to order, Rough Country was out of stock at the on-line retailers I searched, so purchased the Dee Zee DZ87005 from Amazon. It was $103 as I recall. At 3/8” thick and shown at 35 pounds, it is nice and heavy. Fit was very good. I also added a BAK x4s revolver bed cover. Very happy with both.

Black Armour truck bed mat.
Custom cut 1/2" rubber mat.
Thickest, toughest mat on market.

I had a DeeZee bed matt in my Ranger for 18 years, and sold it with the truck. It held up exceptionally, other than dirty it was as good as the day I bought it so I now have the same brand in my F150 and it sits on top of my Ford bed liner that came with the truck new, I have the matt on the bed liner to keep things from sliding around on the plastic bed liner. And it’s easier on the knees.

I have not had a bed mat in the past, but my aging knees have decided it's time for me to get one. I've been looking at horse stall mats... they seem to provide about the same protection at a fraction of the cost. I'm thinking about something like this:

We put that horse matt in my wife’s truck, that’s what she wanted. It does hold up just as well, the only thing is it isn’t custom fit to go around the wheel wells so it’s only covering the area between them and it doesn’t lay as flat, maybe because it is a little thicker.

I have the Bed Rug full liner but you can get just the mat. After owning one, I don't think I'd ever go back to not having one. It's so nice to be able to throw my bikes in there and not worry about damage. It's really held up well.

I like them as they keep things from sliding, but I don’t have 1/2” to spare on the floor when the tonneau cover is closed.

I like the look of a bed liner, but also really only need a mat to keep stuff from sliding around so I went with DeeZee. It's very grippy, very nice and thick and exactly what I needed for $100:

I threw a stall mat from Tractor Supply in mine. It's not exact fit of course but its 4'x6' in size so covers the majority of the bed floor, 3/4 inch thick, weighs about 90lbs, and provides both grip for items on top of it as well as excellent protection for the bed floor. Also, it was $45 bucks.
