Default Adding Puddle Lights. Worth it?

I've seen many threads on installing puddle lights. I like the idea and could really use them if they work as intended. Can someone tell me if they really illuminate the ground well enough to see where you are stepping?

It seems that adding them to the mirrors would be ineffective because as the door swings open the light would move with it. What type of light does Ford use? I want to add them to my truck but can't get past wondering about the limited power of LEDs, which is what I see mentioned in a lot of DIY puddle light posts. Using real lamps may be different.

I've also seen posts on adding puddle lights under the truck, which seems more effective, but what about damage from rocks and highway debris taking them out?

Thanks,
Randy

Rock lamps..... I never heard of them but I guess mods are a new thing for me seeing as how this is the first new ride I've had in 12 years. One thing is certain about the rock lamps - they light up the crap out of everything. Those would be great on a 4x4 but just a bit much for what I want.

That looks good practical. Can they be wired to come on when the doors open (with the interior dome)? It'd be nice to see where your foot is about to land.

Yes.

With a understanding of relays and how they work, you could use the current from the interior circuit to control a relay allowing power to the rock lights.

The "Rock Light" idea is awesome... If anyone was to do it, it would be interesting to see the specifics of the install.

Hella makes some good 4.75" dia lights that do well for rock lights. Rubber housing, glass lens w/ a flood pattern, 55w bulb. And they're cheap. $15 or so for just the light.
