Hey Guys,

I own a 84 F150 and have slowly been putting money into it. Recently It has been starting and running then when I stop and try to restart it 5 minutes later it wont start. I wait awhile and it will crank. I have replaced everything from Voltage Regulator,Alternator,Battery, Starter Solenoid . Then sent it to the shop to have it worked on cause We thought it was a Timing Chain issue. Turns out bad Distributor and had that replaced along with all exhaust and brakes and such. Got it back and the same day it did the same problem again.

So called the mechanic out and he said that the starter is dragging once its warmed up. SO today I replace the Solenoid off the firewall and the Starter and Cable as well.

Now the new thing is it Cranks but the starter is making a horrible noise. All cables I believe are hooked up properly and the starter only goes in one way...... so what is this noise? Almost sounds like the starter is staying engaged after the engine starts?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Probably the bendix on your new starter. Take it back and make them give you a new one. I remember once when I had to replace a starter three
times befor I got a good one,these were rebuilt starters. Was yours
rebuilt ?

 

yeah what he said , or remove it and take it to autozone, advance, etc. they will test it for free

 

Bought it brand new last week at Advance

 

Just double checked the starter on Advances web site and they had this with this start

INSTALLATION ALERT!This starter sensitive to high battery cable resistance; check cables to avoid mis-diagnosing a starting problem.; See Tech Tip # 120; Test Chart Page # S-1


What exactly does this mean? I replaced all the cables at the same time to.

 

They are probably refering to resistance caused by corrosion on the cable.

Since you've replaced the cable,you're one step ahead of them.

You didn't have a problem with the old starter hanging up,did you?

 

According to my mechanic the Old Starter was dragging due to it getting warm after running for abit. The brand new one is making a horrible noise almost like bad ball bearings sounds on a tire. Not a grinding sound but more of a scraping sound. And it keeps going after I start the truck the sound doesnt stop.

 

OK Finally got in touch with my mechanic and he's a big time ford guy. He says I need to Shim my starter says that when I turn the Key and the starter gear moves forward and engages the flywheel that after i let go of the key it is not going back far enough to disengage itself. Says a few Flat head washers should do the trick. got to move it back abit off the bell housing.

Gonna try that as soon as the weather clears abit.

I've never had to shim a Ford starter, generaly when the starter wont
engage or disengage, its because of the bendix failure.

Since the starter has to come off anyway, I would take it back to
Advance and have them replace it.

 

Yeah good idea cause its covered and I still have my reciet. SO should i replace it and try again and if it does it on the new one try the shimmy?
