Default something broke with 4x4

Hi every1. i have a 84 f150 4x4. I lock my hub and was set to tow my other car. I made it about 50 ft b4 i heard something clankin and squeeling. i stopped and could not find anything wrong with it. I thought i broke my manual hubs so i went and replaced them today. They looked exaclty as the new 1s i put in, so i assume they are fine. I put it in 4x4 and started to drve and it felt like it was struggling and would not pick up very well. What could this be? axles? driveshaft? front diff? thanks

Lock the front hubs but keep it in two wheel drive. Drive it a little and see if it still makes noise.

the transfer case more than likely got bound up and broke the output shaft to the front driveshaft usually the driveshaft will break but it sounds like the output went this time.... had a jeep that did this and it made a hell of a racket and it didnt like to move either.

Check the ujoints in front axle. I blew up both outside joints in my 83 trying to walk off of a icy patch in my drive way.

if it is what I think it is it would not effect 2 wheel drive but it would need to be fixed about a 600 dollar deal at a transmission shop. t eventually would ruin the transfer case cause of debri from the break. To be sure this isnt what happened pull the front driveshaft check the u joints and inspect the front yoke. I would say put it in 4 wheel with the shaft off then see if it makes a racket if it doesnt then that isnt the culpret. One thing definitely never engage 4 wheel drive on a hard surface like concrete or asphalt it will cause binding cause it is engaging the front and rear together and eventually the front or rear will travel at different speeds and it will slip any way it can. Now newer all wheel drives have a differential that allows the front and rear to slip without breaking parts but the older 4 wheels dont so I say avoid lockin them in unless it is on gravel mud ice and such

shoot I just read about putting it in 2 wheel with the hubs engaged check your front end with the driveshaft removed. You might have popped a shaft in there if that is the case junkyards have em cheap. Make sure before you put them in, you replace the ujoints in the shafts and the little needle bearings in the spindle. Do it right the first time and it will last you a lifetime

hey sorry for the late reply, i just got a chance to check this past weekend . and it deffinlty makes the same noise when the fronts are locks and in 2wd. I will try with the driveshaft out nd c what happens. It drives great in 2wd. It makes a really weird sound like squeeks n clinks at the same time and its constant. sounds likea a young couple on an old bed. lol thanks errbody

I'm entering the fun awful late. Yes, pull the front drive shaft and report what happens in both 2 wd and 4 wd. If possible put the truck up on stands, test and listen from underneath.
