Default Choke Problems

I own a 1984 F-150 Step side it has the 5.0L V-8 in it. I just recently switched out the old exhaust manifolds for some flow tech long tube headers. I am having a problem fitting the choke tube the gathers hot exhaust gasses and pull it into the choke to open the spring inside. I do not want to drill a hole or make any modifications to the headers. The tube has to be installed or it just doesn't restart i cant start it run it for ever but the second i shut it down it doesn't refire. I was wondering if anyone has any idea on how to fix it it still has the original carb with motorcraft choke.

Is the tube too big, to small, too short? You can buy fittings to change to size of the tube fitting. If it is too long or short, you can add length with some extra line, and compression fittings, or cut the tube, and add a length of fuel hose to it with some pressure clamps.

Default Choke

Its not a problem of having trouble with the choke tube. The old exhaust manifolds had a hole in it to accommodate the choke tube to slide in and be able to reach the hot gasses. But with the new long tube headers there isnt a hole in them to fit the choke i am looking for an alternative for it to work with the long tube headers. Without having to drill a hole into them to get the tube to the hot gasses.

Yeah, man, sorry, I don't know how you could do that without drilling a hole. That's a tough one. The heat from the exhaust manifold heats up the choke to open it so it is pretty important. Unless you want to install a manual choke.

This may sound far fetched but I was thinking if you could somehow wrap the tube around the exhaust like they do with fuel injected engines. It would heat the tube that way?

Yeah i mean that possible could work but i don't know what that could do the exhaust if moisture gets in between and heats up cools down heats up cools down

You could look into converting it into an electric choke too, just run a wire from the altenator

I put a manual choke on my 66 390 GTA. Took care of all the aggravation and problems with cold weather startups and fast idle. The kits hardest part was the choke cable. The minute U wrap a steel exhaust pipe it starts rusting and within 2 years it will break.
