Default Carbureotor Problems

I have a 1978 F-150 Custom 1/2 ton. It has a brand new 400 dropped into it. I've recently got it on the road, but my carb keeps loading up, spitting some smoke, then dying. Any help? It's a Holley Carb. It may need rebuilt but I want to know the best route to go. Thanks!

If its a brand new motor you have to tune the carb and motor. You know, fiddle with timing, little change in plug gap, air/fuel mixture, carb spacer or no, all sorts of little adjustments.
