Default Axle Code

Anyone know what the axle code "143" translates to? That's what is on my door tag. I've seen 2 digit codes, but not 3 digit. It was made in Canada. I'm thinking it's a 3.42.
Also, when did they stop using the 9" rear? I thought they stopped in the early 80's, but my '86 has one.

I have an 86 and it also has a 9". Do you have a picture of that door tag? Would just like to see that 3 digit axle code for myself.

Well that's quite interesting. Even the VIN decoders are having issues with your plate. I can't find anything for the trans code or axle code. Here's how the VIN decodes...

http://www.angelfire.com/ca/TORONTO/VIN/ford.html

2FT = Ford Motor Company of Canada Ford Truck completed
D = 5,000-6000 lb
F15 = F-series, 150, 4x4/AWD
N = V8 5.0L
6 = Check digit
G = Model year 1986
C = Oakville, Ontario
B = Ford division

Interesting. I've got a 2WD, the trans is a 4-speed OD manual. I'll have to crawl under the truck this week and see if the axle tag is on the pumpkin.

Probably. It was built in Canada, but sold new here in Indiana.

I think I found it. The 14 is a 3.00 ratio, non-locking diff. The 3 is a code for power steering delete. I looked on the original purchase receipt, and one line has a $299.95 charge for R/P P/S, which I'm guessing is dealer installed power steering.

We don't have different codes in Canada, in my experience they're the same. This is very interesting - hadn't seen that before.
The 14 would be a 3.00 to 1 ratio but I have never heard of having a number after the code - and that it would be related to a steering option.
Learned something. Thanks for posting your results. Might save me from scratching my head someday.
