Default Transmission Concern When Cold

I have seen a lot of posts but have not seen one about my issue. I have a new 2024 STX 4X4 with the 5.0 engine. Of course it has the 10 speed automatic transmission. I have had the truck for about a month and it has about 2000 miles on it. When I start it up and drive away slowly (lots of kids in my neighborhood so I take it easy) it shifts hard from 1st to 3rd when I do not let it warm up. It skips 2nd gear normally warm or cold. If I let it warm up for about 4 to 5 minutes or more, no hard shifts. And now that the temps outside are colder, I let it warm up even longer, Again, it shifts smoothly from 1st to 3rd if I let it warm up a bit. If I drive quickly starting off, it seems to shift smoother when I don't let it warm up. So I am thinking it needs to have the fluid level checked in the transmission because after I drive about a block, it never shifts hard again. Almost like the transmission fluid level is a little low till it warms up slightly and expands. Anyone else notice this issue and if so, what was done to correct it. And yes, I am taking it into the dealer where I bought it so they can check it, Just waiting for a loner to become available. Thanks in advance for your replies. Phil in Tennessee.

2022 5.0, I usually feel hard shift from 1 -> 3 like you described when cold (no matter how easy I am on throttle), for me it’s usually just the first shift when I pull out of my driveway. Having had a ram hemi for the last 10 years, I got into the habit of not idling the motor too much before drive off, which doesn’t help this 10r80 issue.
it doesn’t bother me too much but I’d like to know too.

Thanks for the offer. I am going to try and work with my Ford dealer and see if they can resolve the issue. If not, I will reach out to you for your assistance. Thanks again!

No mechanical device with a lubricating or hydraulic system likes to operate without a warm-up period.

Skipping 2nd gear is normal. It will only use 2nd when under a load or in towing or sport mode.

The former shift is due to the trans being cold as well as slightly thicker fluid.

Quickest way to avoid the issue. Let the vehicle run a bit as you stated when you let it warm up.

If no time for that. Give it a few seconds. Foot on brake and shift to reverse, pause, neutral, pause, drive, pause, reverse, pause, drive..... and go.

Just need to get all the chambers filled with fluid after sitting.

Think of your body after sitting for a movie, long drive or sleeping. The first thing you do is stretch and then take your first easy step.
Next time, wake up and sprint straight to the bathroom. Chances are you'll sprain, strain or hurt something in the body. The truck might be mechanical, but still needs a "stretch" before being asked to work.

I don't fully understand why but I had a recent issue with hard and delayed shifts 3 to 4 and 4 to 5 when cold, after the trans warmed up no problems. Thinking it was time for a trip to the dealer I tried an adaptive learn reset to see if it would help, its always the first thing the dealer wants to try for trans issues. To my surprise all my issues went away for now and the trans is shifting perfectly both cold and hot.

I don't disagree with your theory as when I was working, I was responsible for aerial lift trucks and we let the hydraulics warm up before using the lifts. However, this is the only truck, including other older Fords, that I have experienced the issue with. Normally, I let all my vehicles warm up before driving off, however the few times I didn't, I noticed the hard shift.

Understand and I have actually done that and it has helped.
However, sprinting to the bathroom....Nah, never mind...LOL!!!

I had an old Dodge when I was in Montana back in the mid 90s when I got to be 10 or 15 below, the transmission would make a whining howling sound for 20-30 seconds when it was first started. Not much issue after that. A truck went for almost 350k before I sold it. I’ve always hated Dodge, but that was a pretty good truck.
