Default Self tinting mirrors problem

So here's what I have. The mirrors tint when it gets darker enough to activate them and stays that way. Even when there's on cars behind me. It's been in for this issue 4 time's. The first time Ford told the dealer to update the softwear (had go back again for that) that didn't work. Then the third time they said they replaced inside rear view mirror (that didn't work). The fourth time I showed the technician what I had found. That the mirrors work 100% correctly. If I put tape over the infrared transmitters that track your eye movement for the blue cruise. The technician said it was first time he had seen this and that he was going call the ford tech line. That was 3 weeks ago. Dealer said Friday they still waiting on ford. And they are contacting ford again. Anyone else having problem?

Just trying to understand the problem. Are you saying the mirrors turn dark at night and won't lighten up even when there are no cars behind you?

Yes there suppose tint when it detects head lights behind you and only then. These stay tinted when ever you drive it at night. 2021 F150 Platinum

I have the exact same issue in my truck with blue cruise. Mirrors go full dark at night and stay there. It became a real issue after adding window tint, so I disabled the auto dimming. Never tried covering the IR sensor, so that is a interesting find.

There is a photo sensor on the back of the inside rearview mirror. This sensor shuts the mirrors off in the day. Make sure it is not blocked. If it's not blocked I think it is defective mirror.

I have no idea if mine dims or not. It does not seem to do nearly as much as the old lever-type mirrors. How can you actually tell when it dims?

They are noticeably darker. You can check them when it's dark by shining a flashlight at the inside rearview mirror. The inside and drive's side mirrors should darken noticeably.

Sounds like the light sensor in the mirror (one that faces rear of the truck) needs an IR cut filter on it. You can get them cut to various small sizes off eBay for less than a tenner. That, or if you know anyone that has an IR cut filter for their camera, will confirm IR being the culprit (and you can glue it over the rearview sensor for a fix).

Default self tinting mirror problem

Update on this problem I have had it back to the dealer 2 more time. The dealer has been great. They have confirmed that the mirrors are not working as intended. The technician took the truck home and confirmed that the mirrors would not work properly unless both infrared L E D's were covered up. Now Ford engineering is saying that this is normal operation. TIPICAL FORD RESPONCE FOR A PROBLEM THAT THEY CAN'T FIX!!!!!!!!!! So I guess it is normal operation procedure to cover the infrared L E D's if you want your mirrors to work properly!!!! This is a crock of S**T!!! What I don't understand is why the infrareds are on all the time when the truck is running. These are only suppose to be for the blue cruse, which is not activated on this truck, because software has not been updated by FORD.
