Reverse binding then neutral drop…
Hey guys - I have a '21 Tremor built in late November, picked up about a month ago. 7xx miles on it.... three times now I've had an issue where when I put the truck into reverse, and it'll somewhat bind up - almost feels like when you're in 4WD and have an issue turning - where it'll go back in reverse but needs some effort. It almost feels more like the brake is on, but it isn't. When I put it into drive it lags behind going into gear, then essentially does a neutral drop with a loud CLUNK, then drops into gear.
My thought is that when I'm backing up and this has happened, it's been when there are other cars around parked at odd angles to where it isn't exactly like a parking lot, and I think the truck is inappropriately turning on the automatic breaking feature trying not to hit another car that it thinks is close by, but then not going into gear right away when I put it in Drive. Has anyone else experienced issues with this? I'm going to ask the dealer to flash the ECU with the newest updates, as I see there are some TSB's that talk about gear issues, but nothing specific to this, and wanted to see if anyone had seen/heard/experienced this for themselves.
FWIW, this happens when the car has been parked an I’m hopping in and turning it on, then throwing it in reverse. Truck is in 2h and normal driving mode. It’s almost like the transmission is trying to do something different than it is being told to do by me (if that makes sense).
Thanks in advance!

It may be the reverse brake assist if it thinks something is a danger behind you. I disabled mine because I was backing out of a parking spot on the edge of a parking lot and it thought one of the cars passing through was close enough that it slammed on the brakes hard enough to jolt me and the family pretty good inside the truck. After that, I disabled mine.
I also had a loud clunk happen to me when I pulled into work, stopped, and put it in reverse from drive. I found this to be the auto start/stop. It shut off the truck when I came to a stop and when I shifted to reverse it banged when it restarted. I also tend to disable that at just about every startup now. I can also get a thump when I put it into drive on my driveway. I noticed if I set the parking brake it doesn’t do this. My driveway is on a SLIGHT incline.

I also think it might be the rear park assist applying the brake while it’s in reverse, and then I think it keeps the brake applied when I’m trying to shift into drive, then causing the neutral drop type scenario. It feels much more like driving with the e-brake on than anything… like you’re forcing the truck to go back when it doesn’t want to. Otherwise the transmission seems to be fine, which is why it’s odd!!!
Got it to do it again this am while backing up out of a parking spot. It’s definitely a combination of the rear break assist stopping the vehicle along with it trying to hold it there even after putting it in drive, then CLUNK. I think it has something to do with the auto hood as well maybe preventing it from going into gear.

When it happens does the cluster indicate that reverse brake assist activated? If you don’t get the message indicating that with the chimes for it then that’s not it. I’m thinking the transmission is low on fluid which could cause a lag like that.

When the rear brake assist comes on, does the screen always show something? Or will it apply light brake pressure and then have the brake come on heavy if it thinks you're going to hit something? The only time I've seen an alert on the info screen has been when I was once backing up with a tow hitch hauler on and the truck thought I was going to hit it, applying brake and then slamming on them. The only time the screen showed anything was when it slammed on the brake, but it wasn't showing anything while applying light brake pressure.
it seems it might be happening after sitting for some time on a slight incline. I’m wondering if maybe it’s low on transmission fluid and that’s causing an issue…. We’ll see soon enough!
