If technology is going to advance rapidly in 3-5 years....actually it already has as there are test batteries out that charge in a fraction of the time and 800V systems are said to be expanding.......then what's the motivation to buy this truck with its technology of today that won't be available until next year?
Regardless of the vehicle this holds true to all of them. Kind of like I waited a few extra months to buy the '15 instead of a '14 because of the Aluminum body... Almost waited for the '16 because Sync 3 was replacing MFT in the '15's. Rarely a year or two goes by that there aren't further advancements across the board.

One would hope/expect for continuing advancement but I fully understand what you're saying. Like the guy that just bought the latest and greatest computer and by the time he gets home with it there's already a new one replacing it...

If you're going EV might as well jump in now if it works for your needs.

For me it’s no different than any other technology. If I waited until there was nothing new on the horizon I’d never buy anything. I will rarely be fast-charging it. If you’re planning on regular long trips then maybe wait.

This entire thread summarized in four short sentences.

How about, "In around 10 years almost everyone will be buying an EV for their next vehicle"
Still not sure I agree. We'll see. That is the way predictions work!

I totally get that. But in this case it seems like those improvements aren't just on the horizon, some of them are already here. I guess part of the question is wondering about what the value of V1 will be in 2023 or 2024 and onward. It seems that a good many people who have to have V1 of something new usually can't wait to get V2 when it comes out regardless of if V1 still meets their needs. And this isn't a thousand dollar cell phone or TV, it's a $50k vehicle. Just ruminating is all.

Yeah. I've been hearing for over a decade about how fast charging or solid state batteries or low cost EVs are "just around the corner". They have finally become practical for many people, but if those breakthroughs do happen, all of a sudden those existing EVs are worthless. But then again, most gas vehicles will be too.

Wouldn't change it for the world either. That's got to be one of the stupidest comments I've read today and that's saying something. Congrats

You should have kept reading the article as he said the new Plaid models are that good that they don't need a Plaid plus because the performance numbers are already the fastest on the planet for ANY production vehicle. I'd say that's pretty impressive to say the least

Same argument could be used from everything from vehicles, computers to cell phones. Technology is improving so rapidly that one can never have the best for that long. I've watched people sit on the sidelines waiting for the best computer and meanwhile they don't have one to use in the meantime ;-0. There is a good chance that the Lightning may even perform better once it's eventually built with the technology improving. For me the 300 miles with 1000 lbs in the box is plenty for my lifestyle but of course some people are going to have to wait. Will probably be 10 years before the EV tech is advanced enough and at a similar price point to replace the F350 trucks I'm thinking but who knows things can change so fast especially with so much money and players working on EV tech nowadays.
