I'm pretty sure if the load is heavy enough the AMP and the factory 'plastic' would suffer some damage, if subjected to it. Doesn't really matter in that case. I would always strap down larger heavy loads and not rely on the bed extender to keep the heavy load in place. I think the lightweight AMP and factory extenders are that way so they are easy to manipulate, flip up and out of the way and easy to remove when needed - camping, grocery shopping, grabbing some lumber, landscape stuff, etc. If they were solid steel, that would be a pain to move and manipulate for everyday use.
1, it's SQUARE when so you get the full use of the bed (no rounded corners like the others)....
2, it's STRONG made of aluminum....
3, it FOLDS when not in use & finally....it doubles as a RAMP.
@bushpilot
Didn't know that existed. That's pretty cool!
How does it mount to the truck?
I don't see exactly how it mounts to the truck - Does it 'flip' up and into the truck when not in use, or just have to be manually reversed?
Any drilling needed for the mounting system?

no drilling, it leverages existing hardware for mounting (same as most).
Take a look at their site - when used to extend the bed it attaches to the tailgate latch hardware (on both the tailgate and the bed)
when used as a "cage" in the bed (to keep things contained) - it can leverage tie-down hardware.
Factory extender here too, convenient for all the reasons road pilot mentioned.
this thing (like some of the others) wastes a lot of space....its really only extending the MIDDLE of the truck bed.....it leaves a lot of unusable space outside the framed area....especially compared to the READY RAMP....the amount of spaced gained w/ the factory solution is considerably small.
After I bought my truck in 2021 I purchased the Amp Research bead extender which I am happy with as it was similar to the one in my old truck. If I was looking for one today, the Ready Ramp does look interesting.
The above bed extenders are nice, but if you want to use the truck without it, you have to remove it completely AND store it somewhere.
I went with the OEM bed divider. It splits in half and folds up alongside each side of the bed. Can also be flopped out (to extend the bed) or flopped in (to create small cubby at the rear for hauling thigs you don't want flopping around the bed).
This is the divider in my truck when it is flipped in -- note that I do NOT have to two halves locked together (no particular reason; I had just gotten done installing it). Just imagine the image above but flipped inside instead of outside.
With the pieces folded to the side walls, can you still fit a full 4x8 sheet flat in the bed, or do they extend beyond the wheel wells?

when tucked in this position, what holds it in place? I guess the upper strap can be attached to tie downs, but what about the bottom?
you'd have to look at their website - they have a loop that can be adjusted like a tie-down....and theres NOTHING from preventing you from putting more tie downs on it....its also being pulled against the bed (front) or tailgate....it really doesn't need to be tied down in multiple places...its not pivoting or FLIPPING like the other bed extenders, so its not an issue.
I dont plan on keeping the ready ramp in my truck all the time....for that I'll just keep a cargo bar in the bed....they're cheap enough im not worried about it getting stolen.
Personally - I've used a "cargo bar" for years as a way to partition things off and keep items from rolling around....good enough for a long haul trucker....its work for me plenty of times!
