Default up grade to a 20 or 21?

I’m looking at trading in my 2012fx4 3.5 3.73 for either a 20 or 21, I have found a few 2020 lariats with good mileage, also found a nice 2021 with good mileage 5.0 with 3.31 gears. i was leaning towards the 21 but i know their were rumors of a bunch of issues with the vehicle that were pushed out during covid. Has anyone found more issues on the 21's more than normal? This 21 i found had a part replaced in the tranny for hard shifting.

From what I've observed here on the forums and on FB groups is it seems the 22's have the most issues, followed by the 23's, then the 21's. That being said, they all have there quirks. The 21's have more prevalent issues with updates being locked up it seems. The early job 1 trucks frames are also missing certain mounting holes for Tremor skid plate and Raptor skid plates. If that's something you're interested in adding you will want to find Job 2 or later truck. The 2022's just seem to have a lot more problems across the board. I think that's when quality suffered the most when COVID finally caught up to the manufacturing process. 2023's seem a little more solid, as they should be 3 years into a production run. Still, your information will be skewed by reading forums and FB pages simply because people tent to post when they have problems, not when everything is working as it should. All of this is purely my opinion based on my observations, nothing backed by data Just a grain of salt.

2021's are the ones with the least amount of option deletes from the "pandemic". If you are looking at a 2021, go to the "about sync" screen in the touchscreen menu. If you see the Sync version is blank, or it says Sync 20262, 20301 or 20312, then do not buy it unless the dealer (assuming you are buying it a Ford dealer) agrees to update or replace the APIM with a new one.

I have a 21, it's pretty much been fine. The only issues I had really where that the APIM was stuck on the original update until the dealership manually updated it, Also, the OEM batteries are junk, which you'll see plenty about if you read the forum.

There are a lot of trucks out there. This Carfax information would be a hard pass for me when I am searching. That said, to answer your question, my '21 Lariat PB has been great. 34,500 on the clock. Oh, and I have a heated steering wheel.
