Default Quick E85 Whipple Question

Hey guys,

I have a Stage2 Whipple running the Whipple tune on my 18. If I found a cheap pump full of E85 can I run that with the current tune? I guess asking if its interchangeable with the 93 octane I run now. Not looking to run it full time, just to mess around now and then. Any concerns, considerations or is it a no go without doing a different tune?

Thanks,

Rayo

Rayo,
I think to run E85 we need to upgrade the fuel pump in the tank and the injectors. The way engineermike explained it to me before was the stock fuel system cannot supply enough fuel to support E85 at power levels a 2018+ Whippled Coyote can make.

And the tune doesn’t support it

Thanks! I thought that was the case too but I didn't want to stick my neck out that far.

Just as a reference I went from about 17 MPG on 93 pump gas when I was still naturally aspirated to 12 MPG on E85 under normal driving conditions.

Under a WOT condition the difference would probably be even more pronounced.

Even with the OZ tune I think one must load a different calibration when you do the fuel system upgraded (injectors and bigger pump) for E85.

To run E85 with the Stage 2 Whipple package it would definitely require a different calibration and some additional fuel system upgrades as well. When we build the newer 5.0L here for E85 and a Whipple we would upgrade the in tank fuel pump, the fuel injectors, and the high pressure fuel pump upgrade as well.

OK I think I understand it better now. Basically while the engine supported it back when it was normally aspirated, with the Whipple, current injectors and stock pump capacity we would starve the system if attempting it now due to the increased fuel demand.

My original thinking was if it was interchangeable and added some increase in power a tank now and then would be fun to play with, obviously knowing MPG is gonna go way down. But I hear you all... don't do it.

Keep in mind too, e85 quality can vary wildly from pump to pump. A lot of folks I know that run it carry testers around because they've encountered levels as low as e40.
