Unhappy Encrypted Tune

Greetings,

I have a 2019 F150 with the coyote engine. I purchased it from a dealer a couple of years ago and it had a tune SCT I’ve been told. The tune is encrypted, so when anything is connected to the OBD port, it reads nothing. My ECU is invisible. I can’t use fordscan to adjust tire size, Bambi mode, etc. I went to a local tuner that specializes in SCT and same results, nothing comes up on the computer once attached to the OBD. He suggested having the dealer return to factory, so that I can retune again. Dealer wants $500 to convert back to stock.

Any ideas out there to avoid having to retune? Don’t know why the previous owner would install an encrypted tune. Thanks for any feedback!

Granted my truck is old, I’ve personally not seen it before where a tune would block communications to the pcm yet alone other modules. All I’ve ever seen is the tune be completely locked - ie you cannot make any adjustments

I think I would start by contacting sct directly and verify if that’s even possible

Assuming it’s not they should be able to provide trouble shooting steps to verify power and communications from obd2 to the pcm etc

I can’t communicate with the PCM at all. The scan tool asks to enter the pcm number, which I don’t have and would have to remove it to find out. Tony Ganyon connected his laptop with his tools to it and entered the vin number of my truck. Nothing at all either. Will try SCT, but it looks like I may have no choice to delete the tune and reinstall something else. Thanks!

Thank you for reaching out. I live in FL and near Tony Ganyon’s shop. I went to him about two weeks ago and he told me that because I don’t have the actual tuner that the previous owner used to download the tune, I’m out of luck. He attached his computer to my OBD, but nothing reads. I even have a code reader that registers nothing when attached to the port. I think the previous owner turned in the tuner when he traded in the truck, but the dealer lost it. I’m not computer savvy, so I don’t know if the MPVI2 or 3 would be able to read anything if attached to the OBD.

How exactly does the MPVI2 work? Thanks again!

I checked, the only thing back there is an SCT attachment with a cable that goes from the OBD port to the tuner. It’s not connected to anything at the moment.

You can’t unlock or decrypt the tune file without the key. Only the tuner who created the tune has that. You’ll need to remove the tune/revert to stock tuning and find another tuning shop that does not encrypt or lock their tune files. But like someone else said, even with a locked tune, the OBD port should work and scan tools should function. Best to revert to stock and verify the OBD port is functioning as it should.

I have customers who needed their PCM reflashed to stock because either they could not revert to stock (lost the tuner) or they bought a vehicle that was tuned and didn’t realize it until they brought it to the dealer for service. At my shop we use Ford tools to flash to stock, IMO that’s the best way to go- start with a clean PCM calibration then retune.
