I may be Interested in this - I have a 2018 Lariat with Sync3 non nav apim, with the on screen dual zone climate controls, SiriusXM (antenna is already installed on vehicle exterior roof from factory and if i remember right, this also includes the gps antenna within the enclosure even though it isnt used on my particular setup), factory backup cam and apple carplay/android auto with the 2 USB ports in the front center console (this setup), but no SD card reader.
Do you know if this apim will work with this setup in a 2018? Havent done much personal research yet of what all is required for a nav apim swap in on a 2018 to work aside from plug and play, (i do have forscan and understand a lot of post install configurations have to happen when swapping these). - After some quick Googling... Looks like the Sync 3 units with the carplay dual usb ports are pretty much plug and play at a glance, looks like the carplay specific usb's plug into the gray plug on the back of the apim.

This should work in a 2018. If you have FordPass with Wifi Hotpsot (which 2018's should), the firmware on this APIM does not support the wifi options menu. There's some detail around that in this thread regarding upgrading the firmware and Sync to support that functionality: https://www.f150forum.com/f118/upgra...ctions-458828/

Interesting - so my 2018 has wifi built into it where I can connect the truck to my home router for the "once every decade sync firmware upgrades" that Ford pushes out over the air. My truck has the option for the ATT WiFi hotspot as well but ATT where I live is garbage so never activated it. (My company pays for my Verizon hotspot and it's much faster anyway.) I did some research on this particular apim last night and looks like it came out of a 2017 Ford Edge/Escape/Focus or fusion. Does this mean that the APIM doesn't have wifi functionality built into the hardware at all? Or it's there but just needs to be activated with some forscan tinkering? If you are saying for firmware upgrades it has to be done via USB, that is no issue I had to do that on my current non nav apim with a USB stick and the cyanlabs utility to go from 3.1 to 3.4. I don't have fordpass but the icon exists on my non nav unit.
I was thinking it would probably be easiest to find a Ford lariat similar to mine with the 502a package, download the vins as built apim data for one with nav, Sirius, dual climate, etc, then flash it onto your nav apim if I go through with purchasing it.
Sorry to bombard you with questions - you seem knowledgeable on this and i just started "forscanning" about 2 weeks ago lol.

There are two different "Wifi's" so to speak. You have the internal APIM Wifi which is what connects to your home router for updates, etc. which every APIM has (including this one).
You then have the Wifi offered by ATT, which is handled by another module in the truck (TCU) that is the subscription service. The APIM is simply the "controller" for that via an options menu. That is the part that I mentioned would not work out of the box with this APIM, since the firmware (calibration) loaded on it does not have that logic, simply because the ATT Wifi option was not a thing when this APIM was manufactured.
The easiest method for the AsBuilt if you did want to purchase it would be to back up your current APIM Asbuilt by taking a screenshot of it, or copying it down somewhere. Then, once the new APIM is installed, you would write that same exact AsBuilt back to the new APIM, but changing the various options listed in the Forscan spreadsheet to reflect that Nav is enabled. I can also do the same for you if you provide your VIN and get it close - you may still have to tweak a few things, but it should be close.
Ah what the heck, i will take it. I need a good weekend project anyway. Thanks for all the information, this has been extremely helpful. I can live without the ATT wifi and fordpass/remote starting via phone - never plan on using it in this truck and i still will have my old stock APIM if i decide to revert back in the future or whatever. Sending you a PM with the more personal info.
