Default Update on vibration issue

I had posted earlier about a shudder or vibration that I was getting in my truck from time to time. Apparently my drive shaft is out of balance. At first they were going to be able to balance it but now the dealership is saying I need a new drive shaft at $444.00 and two new u-joints at $200.00 each, plus tax and labor. I declined and called two driveline specialist in the area and got quotes at $339.00 for the shaft and u-joints plus $65.00 in labor to install, and $450.00 for the same at the other. I called and told them what I had found and then they were able to lower the price to the $400 range installed. Something just doesnt seem ethical to me. Hopefully it fixes the issue. Thanks for all the input.

It is a rare outside chance that they could not have balanced your driveshaft. If it was dented or bent maybe they couldn't but otherwise driveline shops do it all day long under $100, even less for the dealers. Have you priced it being balanced without telling them about the Ford price? Have you inspected it yourself just by looking at it and running your hand over it? If not I would. Good luck.

Back again. Ford wanted to charge me roughly 1000.00 dollars for a driveshaft and 2 u-joints, but after negotiating I got them down around 400.00. Needless to say this didnt fix my problem. Truck is still shuttering. I can make it do it if i put on the emergency brake and give it gas to put it in a bind. It will do it when you release the brake and start driving after that.

assuming this is not an issue with the engine under load like a bad plug or coil, I would have to go with warped rear rotors or out of round drums (which ever is applicable). Can you feel a pulse in the brake pedal when applying pressure?

The emergency brake was not properly releasing. This ruined my rear rotors, brake pads, and emergency brake cable. Ford wants roughly 900.00 to fix it.

It is a relatively easy replace and repair, even if the hubs are questionable though a bit more costly. I would like to think that FOMOCO parts are better than aftermarket but can't confirm I also would think that an independent shop can do better if it is beyond your comfort zone. I think you can do better than 900 P&L. Good luck...
