Default Skip when accelerating, cel sends egr code

Check engine light has been on and a skip slowly developed when accelerating or when power is needed. Took it to Autozone and the cose was for low flow on the egr. Would an egr cause a skip? It also seems to get worse after heating up. If I am pulling the boat it is hard to keep it up to speed without a great deal of skipping and just started backfiring a little. This truck is not used very often, it has 108,000 miles, v8, 1998 F150. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I should also note that when it skipped and a light backfire the CEL blinked for a couple minutes.

All carboned up, Yes. A good de-carboning, run on a winding, hilly road in a lower gear would probably blow the cobs out of it. Reset the faults after you get the carbon out of it and see what you get next.

I will try that. Wonder if I should pull it off and clean egr valve. I am going to mess with it this afternoon. Thanks for the reply.

H20,

What is a skip? I am assuming it to be a miss. Is this correct? I have found that in the past when there is a vacuum leak, sometimes a back fire occurs through a carburator (I know, I am showing my age). Eliminate the vac leak = eliminate the intake backfire. With that said if your EGR has a problem, a bad (leaking) diaphragm is a vacuum leak. Put a hose on the EGR diaphragm and attempt to pull a vacuum. If a vacuum cannot be maintained then replace the EGR valve.

Merry Christmas

Thanks for the replys. I did pull the egr and was surprised how clean it was. By skip, I do mean a miss. At low rpms if you accelerate it will misfire/hesitate/miss to where you have to gear down or let off the accelerator and it will quit. It will lose speed if either is not done. The backfire/misfire is a minor one and does not happen all the time. It was easy to remove egr so I figured making sure it is clean would be a good place to start. This started months ago and only happened very slightly. I actually thought the transmission was having a problem because it only happened when in od and accelerated and very briefly. I will try a vacuum test this evening. Again, thank you for the help.

My experience with the EGR was a surge. It was like I took my foot off the excellerator and then back on and I was just driving normal. No Cruise, just in drive about 60 mph. New fixed the pedal to the metal. Try a couple cans of Isopropyl gas line antifreeze.

H2O

What did you find? A healthy engine should be running about 20"Hg vacuum. Check all other vacuum lines if not.
