Default miles to empty

Driving my 2010 F-150 today and dash dinged and said 32 miles to empty. On way to work it was 324 miles to empty and work is only 20 miles one way? Very confused and then it dies on me 100 yards from driveway. Has anyone had this issue before?

Was your gas gauge planted on E when you left for work?

I use my trip odometer in concert with my gas gauge to know when I need gas, so no, I don`t run out of gas.

Sounds like you might have a bad sending unit, hence the question about what the gas gauge said.

Maybe gas gauge float in the tank was stuck at the half mark giving a false reading. On your way to work, the float jostled free which would explain the sudden change from 300+ miles to 32. The reading on the dash is probably calculated from the level taken from the gauge.

Filled up again today and tank was full and gauge only showed little of 3/4 tank and miles to empty said 515 to E. On way home it started going down really fast, got home (only live 3 miles from station) and I then sat in driveway in park and watched it go down by 2's on miles to E, the longer I sat there, the less miles to E it went. It is now to 385 miles to E; I am thinking the sending unit is bad. Is that in tank or external?

Filled up & gauge showed 3/4. Assuming your driveway is reasonably level & while parked & watching miles to E drop could be the computer refreshing based on the signal from the gauge. I would bet the sending unit in the tank is bad. The gauge & fuel pump are a unit. If you end up having to replace this, its $$$. There are aftermarket ones out there that are cheaper than the OEM. I had the pump/gauge unit replaced on my old truck, because of pump issues, with an aftermarket pump, & the gauge never worked right on it.
