Default Welding Paper

Welding paper is very expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives? I need to weld floor pans and don't want anything hitting the dash and glass. Blankets are heavy.

Damp newspaper, but FG blanket is best. Use long bungees across the cab to hold it up near the roof.

And you think that being disabled makes welding slag behave differently around you? Talk about naïve and immature. Good luck with that.

I think that the guy asks an interesting question that's pretty broad: is there a cheap alternative to The Right Tool that I can get away with for a one-off? Generally the answer is "Yes, but...", with the "but" involving a greater long term amortized cost (which may be unimportant if the item will get used once) AND greater experience required to use the suboptimal tool. The second part is usually the rub, because IF you know enough to use the cheap alternative effectively, you are probably performing the action often enough to warrant the right tool.

I use a copper back up bar and TIG sections at a time when doing a pan weld.

BTW, I have to agree with Scott91370. Buy the best and cry once. After all, you're talking about maintaining a road-worthy automobile. Do it right, do it once. Save up your pennies. Next, don't be so sensitive. I'm disabled too. So what? Cowboy up!

Excuse me? The statement has to do with his comment, the fact being welding paper is nearly $200 a roll. If I could afford it I would buy it, it has nothing to do with welding slag. You try dealing with a quarter million dollar hospital bill at nineteen. The stupid people in America are absolutely astounding.

I'm using MIG. My concern is spatter contacting exposed wires and under the dash and possibly making its way up to the windshield. I have multiple welding blankets that I'll lay down and just bought a leather apron which I'll use to cover the torch while welding aside from wrapping exposed wires with a couple of layers of thick tin foil.

Sensitive, lol. Nope. If only you knew. People like him are the wimps. Reminds me of faculty and staff at most Universities who complain and whine about having to provide accommodations to individuals who have physical disabilities and chronic health issues.
