I'm leaning towards a loaded-up XL (101A, Sport Appearance, STX, FX4, Max Tow) or a nearly-loaded XLT (302A, Sport Appearance, FX4, Max Tow). A Lariat spec'd virtually the same as the XLT is more than $5k higher than the XLT, and that's with the 501A package, not the 502 (comparing MSRP's). For me at least I just don't see an extra $5k+ worth of "truck" over the XLT (and $10k over the XL). Am I missing something here?
Personally, I regret not stepping up to a Lariat but at the same time I can't really say I'm disappointed.

I had planned to buy an XL with a some select options/gadgets. However finding an XL with those options wasn't happening (lots of inventory searches). The 302A package had most of what I wanted, and the XLT's had better incentives and rebates at the time.

The only regret I can say I have is not getting the tailgate step.

The XLT usually has so much more incentives than the XL that buying an XL makes no sense.

Only regret with buying an XL was not getting a V8 motor. Besides that does plenty for me, got aftermarket leather seat covers and good to go to save seats from staining.

I regret missing a few options. But I'm very happy with my 301A XLT.

I would like the 36gal. tank and 3.73 gears. But such is life. I'd also love a manual tranny.

There is niceties and necessities when it comes to options and trucks. Those will vary between person to person.

I always say buy the truck you want and can afford from the get go. Always makes the most sense financially.

That being said, I have a XL with the 101A packages, Sport Package, Max Tow and a few other options and it will serve me well. I could afford a $75K Limited or Platinum if I wanted, but the extras are just not worth it to me. YMMV.

I have the 10-speed so I'd cramp up and run off the road before I ever got out of 6th gear.

I love my XLT. Never saw a need for the higher trim levels.

I love my XLT. The only thing I wish it had was proximity keys/ push start and auto climate control.

The only thing I wish my XL would have is proximity fob/push start and a backup camera. If you get an XL, you need to get 101A and the Sport Appearance at least.
