Default Wipers quit

2016 XLT, plain-Jane intermittent wipers. Wipers and washer wouldn't work today and of course its raining cats and dogs. Fuse #22 is good.

I hope it is just the turn/wiper switch which I can change myself but I assume there is a "module" that controls the works and will require a dealer to service.

What are the chances it is something more serious than just the switch? There were no previous issues or gremlins, other than a sticky drivers door lock actuator.

Thanks.

Dave

That switch is usually the problem when the wipers quit.

I hope so, I'll check with the dealer tomorrow. Part is only US $72, probably translates to about $300 Cdn.....

I should add that everything else on the stalk seems to work ok, high beams, signals, just the wiper/washer has given up the ghost.

did you check the fuses under the hood? #22 and #46.

I did check #22, thanks for the info on #46, checked it and it is good too. #46 is one of older style mini fuses that you can check easily, #22 is one of the newer small cartridge type that requires pulling to check with a multi-meter.

Saga continues. I borrowed a Maxisys scan tool and retrieved code B1131:08, "wiper control module, bus signal/message failure". My local dealer was very nice to let me "try" a new switch before buying and it didn't fix the issue.

Also, my wipers do not operate at all including on HIGH which is supposed to be a fail safe mode to bypass the logic within the steering column control module SCCM.

I could only find a factory pdf online for a 2011 model so I'm working with a handicap. Using the pdf, the repair procedure for B1131:08 with no wiper operation INCLUDING no operation on HIGH suggested to check for an open in the power supply from the fuse box relay to the wiper control motor. The wiring on my 2016 seems to be the same as the 2011 pdf and I do have 12v on the violet/white wire, plus a good ground on the black wire as indicated. The repair process advises to install a new wiper motor.

I was able to use the Maxisys to view live data from the SSCM and was able to trigger all the steering wheel controls which seems to indicate to me that the SSCM is communicating properly.

So, the repair procedure advised to install a new wiper motor which I purchased from the dealer. I don't have the pdf for replacement but I did plug it in and it still doesn't work.

Perhaps the new motor (which has a module in it to communicate with the SSCM) needs to be programmed using the scan tool, which I will try tomorrow morning.

If that doesn't work, I may concede defeat, take the motor back and schedule a repair with the dealer.

Swap out the wiper relay in the BJB with another relay and see if that solves the problem. One of the pinpoint tests for this DTC is to test the relay. Temporarily swapping it with a different relay is the easiest way to test it.

Another test is to run self-tests on the SCCM and BCM and see if that generates any DTCs. After that, it depends on the DTC that is generated (if any).

Thx,

Swapped it with the rear defrost relay and still no-go. I'll borrow the scan tool again tomorrow and see if I find anything else with the new wiper motor module plugged in. Not sure if it needs to be "coded" to the SSCM to make it go?
