Default Winter Set-up

I know the subject has been beaten to death, but I thought I would solicit some opinions.

Having lived in a metro area most of my life I have never even considered running winter tires on a vehicle. This is my 3rd winter in North Western Wisconsin and the second with this truck. The 1st winter I had a Chevy Avalanche with A/T tires, which seemed fine at the time, but my commute was maybe 20 miles each way through the country. I never got stuck, but as people do, I drove for the conditions.

My first winter with the F-150 I drove on the goodyears. I can't say it was all that great, but not the worst either.

This is the second winter with the F-150. 32k on the Goodyears at this point. My commute has doubled each day now. 40 miles each way through country roads that are plowed eventually a day or 2 after the storm. This is making me debate getting a winter set-up.

Anyone in this part of the country run winter tires? I have a feeling I may get a max of 2 seasons out of them with the long commute.

I bet you'd get more than that if you didn't use them year-round.

Canada chiming in. Get dedicated winter tires. Put them on when the snow is here to stay and the weather is consistently below 44*F, take them off when the snow starts to disappear and it starts getting above 44 degrees.

The less you drive in warm weather, the better. Winter tires shine under 44*F (7*C) but start wearing down faster when it's warmer than that. Do this, and they'll last you several winters.

Canada here as well. Once you go to dedicated snows, you will wonder what you did without them.

Concur with the above posts. Once you try a set, you'll wonder why it took you so long to start using them. I have not gotten this truck setup with snows yet, but it is on the agenda.

I've used snow tires on my last F150 and 2 Explorers. Had a really bad set of tires for winter (found out the hard way) on an old Explorer. Got set up with a set of snows on junkyard rims, and haven't looked back since. They were that good.

Mileage wise, figure you will get 25,000 miles or so of useable winter tread.

Wheels are 18x7.5 tires are 275/65R18 General Grabber Artics and are studded. Ordered the whole package from Tirerack: mounted, balanced, ready to roll with TPMS sensors.

The whole setup ran around $1200 bucks, which i know is pricey. However, if you figure most people run a $500 - $1000 deductible, plus the loss of value of the truck, plus any rental car/ personal injuries. Its a no brainier.
