I admit its my fault. but from an efficient point of view, it would make more sense to have one dash and configure it for the different trims.
But to make 3 or 4 different ones just so you can add a clear plastic ring and shift everything 2-3 mm around the **** to make it illuminate?
doesn't sound like a good idea.
But hey what do I know. I just drive that darn truck

I would guess that part of the reason designers do this is to do away with panels where buttons could be. They'll redesign the dash, because on trim levels where there the buttons would be panels, now both dash boards look nicer. Dodge is horrible about this (I'm looking at you, Dodge Dart rental vs. top-line model) and Mazda (CX-9).

How much do you like staring a blank panel, knowing that a few bucks a month could've prevented that?

The reason they can do this is they charge a craploap of money for these trucks and we keep buying them.

Around here, the fine for distracted driving is $287 and 3 demerit points. I'll bet if a cop saw an ipad on a dash, they would just ticket you for "intent to drive distracted" lol But really though, it would probably be an instant fine since you can't control anything on the ipad from the steering wheel controls and you HAVE to use the touchscreen. Hell, even playing with a GPS while driving will get you a ticket.

I bet the guys whose job it is to design all the different iterations with tiny differences, hope your opinion doesn't get around at FoMoCo....

I thought I was the only one with this problem! I also thought as no one else was complaining about it that it was my glasses which are auto sunglasses along with my bad eyes.

It really sucks when the warning thing sounds and you can't read what the problem is. But now I'm used to the fact that it's probably just the RR tire pressure senser going off line again. So I just hit the OK button. Hoping I was right.

Truck is more fun to drive at night when you can see the gages and nav screen.

And yes it's set to manual and full bright day and night.

The screen isn't illegal--the actual video while in motion is. There are numerous exceptions, too.

As for Ford and button/know alignment, you are correct, it makes no sense. Someone probably made a slight adjustment to one template and forgot to adjust the others.
I would guess that there is another unknown part that would be more costly than the surround to change. The difference in cost in the surrounds is probably minuscule and the surround is likely included as part of an assembly, so it only 'costs' Ford the amount of money of an additional SKU.
