Default Wheel Setup Advice

Looking for some advice around the wheel/tire setup that I bolted on today as it didnt work out as well as hoped. Experiencing rubbing on front and rear crash bars that is minor going forwrad and significant in reverse which won't work long term so need to come up with some sort of solution. I still have the stock wheels/tires in the garage so there is the option of throwing the stock rubber back on these wheels but i definitely don't prefer that approach. Other options would be to modify crash bars with some slight trimming, swap front crash bar sides, buy new tires which is probably the most expensive option (305/55/20 or maybe 275/65/20), get the bilsteins adjusted to the top setting. Open to any other ideas as the best case scenario is that I can make the current setup work. Seen lots of F150's running this tire size and some without a level so I was pretty disappointed that it rubs as bad as it does. Open to any ideas!

2018 F150 SCREW Ecoboost FX4
  • Bilstein 6112 in the front at second from top setting
  • Bilstein shocks in rear
  • 20x9 Rotiform Six, +1 Offset
  • 285/65/20 BFG KO2's with about 10k on them

Well to start with you have to much offset for a almost 35” tire, with that size of tire I’m sure your gonna have to cut out both crash bars and maybe put the bilstein on the top clip. I know it not what you wanna hear but a tire that size would work on your factory rims, or ones with +1 offset. On a side not wheels/tires look good.

You’ll have to spread the crash bars. How the kids are doing it I couldn’t tell you. I just took a sawzall to my crash bars and cut them off and painted the ends. You might have to go up another notch on your bilsteins as well. I did some minor trimming on mine up front at the bumper and behind the wheel as well at the cab. I’m running a totally different set up than you (6” lift with ten wide on 35x12.5) so my results could be totally different.
(edit) I think “guess” is right, you’ll need to cut the crash bars to make it work, but you might be able to get away with staying on that setting with the Bilsteins. Question now becomes are you gonna be ok with hacking into your truck?! Lol.

I am not interested in cutting the crash bars out. Spreading them is an option or minor trimming is an option. I would rather just buy tires that fit with these wheels if it comes down to it. Could swap the stock tires onto these wheels for now as I also like how they look.

Any recommendations on tire size for these wheels?

Well your tire size works out to be 34.5” (285x.65=185.25)x2=370.5 divided by 25.4 =14.5” + 20” for your rim = 34.5” diameter. If you go down to a 33” tire,it will give you 3/4” play on both sides of the wheel where the crash bars are. So whatever number combination of sidewall/tire width gets you to 33”.

For what it’s worth, I am running -18 offset w/ 275/55r20 on a bilstein 5100 highest setting and I have just enough room to squeeze 275/60r20 but absolutely nothing larger. I probably would not have ran negative offsets if I didn’t buy the truck with those wheels.

with a -18 offset you would definitely be hard pressed to fit a 275/60r20. That equates to a hair under 33”. There’s a full inch difference between that and the one you run. On his +1 offset,I agree he should be ok. That would be a damn fine stance on yours though😀

I had a lot of leftover cardboard from summit racing, I wonder why..? So I cut out a a disc with the theoretical tire size and “mounted” it with the truck jacked up and it just barely clears, under load I know the crash bar position is going to shift a little bit vertically. I also did it from the inside and outside of the existing tire. My thought is I could just rig something up to spread out the crash bars just slightly if I had to. I want a little more sidewall height than the 55s but yet again, if I didn’t buy the truck with them probably would have gone with 18s. As backwards as it might sound, it’s almost just easier for me to do a little mod if I have to then go through the hassle of trying to sell the ones I have and buy new ones. I do like them a lot with the fender flares now but -18 20” wheels certainly have their challenges.

I have 6112s on the top setting, 20x9 rims and went with 275/60R20. 33 inch tire. I think it is the perfect size tire honestly.

That is a great looking truck! Mine are 10” so with that -18 offset its definitely a close call for me. That black on red is sharp.
