Default Update sync 3 version 2 to version 3 problems

I’m trying to update and seem to be hitting road block after road block. WiFi update progress bar is stuck at 3/4 completion for about 2 hours. Decided to go the usb route and went through all the steps with as required on the Ford owner page. I plug in the usb and it immediately says that usb is detected then goes away. Never do I get system software updating message. I’ve let it idle for an hour with nothing and drove it for 45 min and nothing happens. The red light on my drive blinks for a bit then stops. Any ideas?
2016 f150 and I’m compatible per the vin number on the websight

Did you format the USB as exFAT? Did you extract the downloaded files to the USB drive of just move the entire file over? You have to extract the files so you have a SyncMyRide directory with 5-6 files inside and 2 files in the root of the USB, autoinstall.lst and dontindx.msa

People that have navigation usually do not have issues, its non-navigation that have issues do to low storage space on the APIM. In that case, you might have to remove the gracenotes install. The version of gracenotes you already have and the version that is being installed are the same, you can remove it from the install script of that is the issue.

I have never been able to download over wifi. Have always had to use USB (2016 SCREW Lariat). Running Sync 3 Build 20209

Did you download from Ford Owner site?
Have you made any other modifications to your Sync prior to this?

Mine is all stock and haven't made any third party changes to Sync. The only issue I ran into last year was when updating Nav and Gracenote I forgot to disable auto-shutoff and then upgrade was halted halfway through it. Had to restart the entire process.

But haven't had any issues with Sync

I formatted the drive as exfat and have the two root files also the 7 files have been unzipped. I followed the directions for a MAC from the Ford owner.com sight along with downloading from there as well. My truck has navigation with the 8” screen and haven’t done anything to it at all. I’m wanting to eventually change the usb module out to get apple car play. I’m wondering if I get the module and try the update would that work? I’m not very tech savvy so apologize for some terminology

Changing the USB module will have zero effect.

Have you ever done a Sync update before?

Make sure there is nothing else plugged into a USB port on the truck.

Make sure you downloaded to the computer, NOT to the USB files. Then, unzip the files and move them to the USB drive.

Make sure you properly unzipped the files into the SyncMyRide folder. If they're in the root folder it won't work. If you don't unzip them they won't work. MAC apparently uses something called StuffItExpander that you have to download to unzip the files. https://owner.ford.com/support/how-t...sb-drive.html#

If you unzipped with the native Mac unzipper, it will rename the files and they won't match what is in the autoinstall.lst file. These two pictures will show the before and after of using the native unzip utility on a Mac and what it should look like when complete after renaming the files and putting them in the correct directory structure. Don't worry about the file names as they won't match yours, just look at the file structure as the files are from a 3.4 installation. 3.0 and 3.4 still have the same file structure and that is what is important.

This is my first update attempt. When I downloaded to the computer I then transferred to the drive. I didn’t notice that they were still zipped and unzipped them in the drive and not on the computer first. So I will redo it with the correct Apple app. Thanks for the help I’ll let you know how it turns out.

If you have a windows device around you might try that route as well.

FYI. I swapped my USB port the other day for the CarPlay compatible one. Went smooth other than trying to remove the usb hookup on then back. It was tight and finally got it out. But the new one went right in without issue

I just followed to the “t” and everything looked and acted as it has been described on here as well the Ford sight. I started the truck put the flash drive in all by itself and it immediately said that it detected it but then I never says anything about a software update in progress. I say that because the YouTubers all has their vehicles show that software is being updated. I’ve only had it running for 10 min so maybe it will take bit till it starts?

Well I have done everything I can do. Only thing that happens is the truck says it detects the usb and then the blinking light stops. It’s a 16 gig 2.0 stick formatted exfat. I called Ford and they said it needs to be formatted fat32 while I’m reading verbatim from their web sight exfat. So should I buy another stick?
