Default transmission temp

For the past 2 weeks Ive noticed my trans temp has been quite a bit higher than normal. Its been sitting around the 206-208 degree range. Normally its arount 195ish. I found out its because my AC wasnt running that the trans temp was creeping up that high. From what Ive read anything over the 200 degree mark is horrible for the transmission, and Ive put about 1000 miles on the truck riding at about 206 and have even hit 212 on a hard pull. Is this normal for these trucks?

There's a thread here somewhere that discussed transmission temperature. From what I remember your temps are quite normal. Do some searching and you should find it.

I regularly see over 200 especially in stop and go traffic and while towing. The highest I have seen was about 225 pulling a trailer up a long winding switchback mountain road.. but on long open road trips it's usually dead on at 195.. I wouldn't worry about it, the high speed fan should kick on when temps get higher than they should.

Those are normal temps for the 6R80. If I remember right, these have a thermostat in them that does not send fluid through the cooler until the temp reaches 190 or so in temp.

Yes, these are higher temps that previous units, but are fine in this unit. FWIW, the same transmission in my '07 Explorer with the V8 also runs at these temps.

Readers digest version. There is a thermostat. Those temperatures are normal for the 6r80. The video below should answer some questions you didnt even have yet.

-12*C / 10*F on my way home from work. 25 minute drive, mostly highway doing 105km/h / 65mph. By the time I got home my transmission was 65*C / 150*F.

Don't think I've ever seen my transmission go over 90*C, which is about 194*F, even on the hottest summer days, unless towing.

Loaded question with lots of opinions.

I just changed fluid and filter at 40k. At 45k, I've noticed that it's shifting better into 4th now, all modes. I also added XL-16 which eliminates the squawk noise some of us have (had) on the 5 to 3 downshift. I'll be changing the fluid and filter again at 80k, every 40k.

With the shift down into 4th being rough in sport, I should have changed sooner.

This is an old thread but thought I would add to the conversation. I have Forscan running and am monitoring engine temp, trans temp and grill shutter position. With the AC on the grill shutter never closes more than half way and the trans never gets above 195. Not towing but 92 ambient today.

Turn off hte AC and the shutter closes all the way and only opens slightly as the trans temp gets near 210. I've not gotten the trans any higher than this to see where the shutter will open further but I will. I have to believe Ford new what they were doing and this is normal.
