Default Transmission issues?

Hey guys,

I'm not sure if I should post this question here or in the Engine / Drivetrain Talk section, so I'll start here...

Does anybody elses 2015-2016 F150's transmission feel rough? Once in a while if I'm coasting at a low speed 10-30 MPH and hit the gas (gently) to accelerate the transmission has some lag then finally kicks and goes. I wonder if this has something to do with the lag in the electronics. Also, sometimes when shifting from park to drive, or drive to reverse, the transmission is really clunky. I'd say 1/2 the time I can get a smooth shift, but the other 1/2 the transmission really kicks hard into gear. I back in everywhere, and my buddy even notices it and asks why it kicks into gear so hard sometimes. I figured with it being a brand new truck and barely 7k miles it should be as smooth as could be.

Is this normal or should I take it to Ford to see what's up?

My 2015 had a hard shift at 50kph from 5th to 4th but ONLY when I was applying very light pressure on the gas pedal. It was a HARD downshift, like hitting a pot hole. Took it to the dealer and they installed a software upgrade to the tranny and fixed it immediately. Never had a hard shift again. I believe there is a service bulletin on it, depends on when your truck was made.

Thank you, I appreciate it.

I read somewhere and have been told that the newer transmissions being computer controlled goes through a learning process according to the owners style of driving. I notice a few of those characteristics with my 2014 E.B. Limited and also now with my new 2016 F150 XL.

I wonder how the 10 speed will react more friction more movement constantly. It may provide greater MPG but I will gladly stick with our 6 speed for now. I expect some growing pains with that new technology coming our way.

It may not be the transmission itself but rather the driveshaft. Some have complained about excessive play...it not being greased properly....etc. It's caused a number of drivability issues in our model years and previous. The 6R80 is a good transmission. I've noticed the same things...clunky engagement, jerky when coming to a quick stop, etc. I'm pretty sure all of that is driveshaft related. I could be wrong...but I'm betting on that rather than the transmission. It is possible that you may have a shift strategy update available via the dealer that could help. I'd bring it to them and see what they say. I haven't heard of these transmissions really failing...unless they've been drained of their fluid by a loose line or the solenoid shorting out (used to be common but it was SUPPOSED to be fixed). Other than they're pretty solid.

This is my 3rd F-150 and first with transmission issues. 1st leaking at rear main seal or pump <5,000 miles. 2 weeks at dealer for repair. Now with 23K miles transmission slipped and squealed during acceleration at about 40mph. The most typical problem is rough/hard downshifting. A dealer can reprogram the shifting, but since its computer learns your typical sifting demands it may not solve the problem in the long run.
