Tpms question
I have a 2017 f150 lariat 5.0. I bought a set of used aftermarket rims from someone that had them on a 2019 f150. I assumed the tpms would work on my truck. I had a tire shop try and relearn them using the tpms tool. They weren’t able to get them to work. Since then about 75% of the time the truck shows blanks on all the tire positions on the dash. Sometimes different ones may show up. One time they all 4 showed up for a few days. My question is do they need to be reprogrammed or something? I’m just not sure why they work sometimes and sometimes not. Just wondering if I can use these or if I need to buy 4 new ones and have them installed. Thanks for any info
No, they do not need to be programmed, or reprogrammed. You just need to drive for the truck to recognize them, ASSUMING they are the correct 315mhz sensors. Anyone with a tool should be able to see the frequency they are broadcasting on. Of course it's possible that the 2019 owner never had them working on their truck.
It's possible there are no TPMS sensors, or they are not the correct frequency as mentioned.
For the intermittent display, if you have your original wheels stored near where you park your truck at home, the truck will pick up those sensors.
Not all scan tools will show what frequency is being broadcast. I just went through this with discount tire. I ordered a set of wheels and tires with TPMS and could not get the truck to learn them. Took it to discount, they tried their fancy tool, and it wouldn't work. Only when they installed new ones did they find that the wheel and tire vendor installed wrong frequency sensors.

Sorry to attempt to hijack this post, but did you ever get this figured out?
I have a similar situation and the dealer wasn't a ton of help.
I have a 2017 STX and I am buying my friend's wheels and tires off his 2021 F150 when he gets his upgraded wheels for his new truck. I cannot find information if his TPMS are compatible with my truck and I want the TPMS to work, but not at ~$100+ each

I had Discount Tire put aftermarket TPMS sensors in when I bought new wheels and tires. They work great. Might be a cheaper option than going OEM Ford parts.
It was only an extra $100 for the new sensors. They didn't charge for the install since they had to mount the tires and balance them anyway.

Generic cloneable Autel sensors are $120/4 on Amazon. Requires an Autel tool to clone but this solution programs the wheels not the vehicle. If you have two sets of wheels the truck doesn’t know you swapped.
The Autel sensors can also be configured the traditional way with a unique ESN rather than cloned ESN from your other sensors.

How do you manage to hold one of those on each tire and read the displays constantly so you know when you've sprung a leak in a tire while hauling a half scoop of aggregate in your bed??
TPMS isn't for checking tire pressure once a month, it's for idiots that never check tire pressure. Nice bonus that it will alert you when you spring a leak.
