Thinking of Trading
Hello all,
I bought a new, 2020 F150 3.3l XL extended cab 6.5' bed for $38k out the door. Now has 27,000 miles I enjoy the truck, however I wish I had vinyl seats, 8 foot bed, and more towing / hauling capacity at times.
I just found a 2020 F150 XL with the 3.5l Eco HDPP Supercab and 8 foot bed, vinyl seats with 13,000 miles Ford Gold Certified for $40k. My 2020 is paid off, and selling to Carmax is worth $32k. Id like to have the ability to tow our horse trailer (we have an '18 that we tow with) and 22' enclosed trailer with both our trucks.
I enjoy my 3.3l as a daily driver, its practical and seems to be reliable. Trying to use it more as a truck to haul is not as practical. I worry about trading something I bought brand new, for a used vehicle with potential problems, but as long as the 3.5l holds up it would last forever. The Gold Certified used is a nice piece of mind, 7 year 100,000 mile warranty.
Worth the switch? About $8,000 to get me into it.
Thanks

The 7 year 100k warranty makes the used vehicle a very small concern. Only issue I foresee is maybe cam phasers on the 3.5 Eco, but it is under warranty.
Sounds like a nice "upgrade" for you but I would either try to negotiate them down or get more for your truck elsewhere. I'm surprsied the spread is $8k as both are XL's.

Well, it's a better motor, it's got the HDPP package, it's only 13k miles, it's likely a more desirable truck due to the motor really upping it's towing power, so i'm not surprised at the 8k difference.
Our 18 is the 3.5 Eco HDPP, and it's incredible how effortlessly it moves along compared to my little 3.3l NA. The HDPP really makes it a unicorn, and very capable truck.
The '18 has 70,000 miles and already has had cam phasers replaced, front hub assembly replaced, and still makes funny noises at start up. Maybe it's just what they do. Crew cab, 6.5' bed. This truck is a daily driver, 5 days a week and she hauls her horse trailer on the weekend.
One thing about the 3.3l is it seems to be (more) reliable? Up until I purchased it, I always had 8' beds and miss that the most. But as mbrick stated, that warranty makes a used vehicle with less miles a very small concern.

Take your Carmax offer to the same dealership the truck you want is at, and use it as leverage to get the same or higher for trade in. Not sure where you are, but at least in Texas, trading in a vehicle saves you on the sales tax you already paid for your current truck. Vehicle sales tax in Texas is 6.25%. So if that dealership gave you $32k trade in, you'd only be paying sales tax on the $8k difference instead of the full $40k. That's $2k savings right there.

But on the other hand, the HDPP is hard to find. Even harder in the Supercrew but still difficult. The 3.5 Eco is a fantastic engine. It will spoil you.
I regret not ordering a 500A Lariat Supercrew 4x4 when I had the chance. I had a 502A and really wanted that one in a HDPP but didn’t see it as likely in the future but I really thought 501A would get the package.
I tow a 34 ft travel trailer and 25’ gooseneck horse trailer. But now I’m in an F350 with all the options I wanted.
If the truck has the options you want and can tow what you want, then it sounds like a good deal.
Have you priced out ordering a new one? Just curious.

Agreed. When I bought my 2020, I saw identical truck as the used one I am looking at, discounted for $38k before fees. I was afraid of the Turbos at the time so went with the safe route, but now wishing I had more truck. Now its really going to cost me...
Yes, trade up. And as said above, trading in truck to the dealer you are buying from should save vou in sales tax. The 3 5L turbo is a better choice than the 5.0L. I have the 5.0L in my 2020 and it burns a lot of oil and gets poor MPG.
Just remember you will get echo or boost, but not together. When not towing stay out of boost to save gas.
Good luck
