Default There is a big difference!

Didn’t think there would be a huge difference towing my horse trailer going from the 17 2.7 crew cab with 3.55 gears to the 19 3.5 with max tow and 3.55 gears. I have the longer wheelbase now so that obviously helps but the difference is very noticeable! I’ve owned the 5.0 and 2.7, and this is my 1st 3.5 eco-boost. Very impressed! Didn’t realize what I was missing not having tow mirrors before, makes a huge difference.

Isn't the 17' 2.7 a 6 spd? Lots of extra gear reduction with the 10 spd - tighter spreads too. No doubt the 3.5 has more power, but gearing helps.

OK.. What is the difference? Just the tow mirrors?

Why are you impressed?

I imagine acceleration and that once moving about 20MPH is better with the 3.5L, what would be really interesting is if he provides MPG numbers for towing since it sounds like the setup (trailer) has remained fairly constant, but the truck has changed. It wouldn't be entirely even since his 2.7L was the 6 speed and his new one is the 10 speed, but would still like to know how those numbers changed.

Happy for the OP but at the moment, I think he's just stoked beyond words.

Braking is better with the trailer brake set up on this truck. Can’t really make a mileage comparison because I was towing on snow covered roads some of the time and even had to use 4 wheel drive a couple times. The lie-o-meter says 16.4 since new (850 miles) which includes about 80 miles of towing. Just feels more stable on the road.

With the 2.7 I was getting around 14 or 15 while towing. Also didn’t do the the same route. Same trailer, same horse, different route!

Well, it should feel more stable with the max tow and long bed. That has nothing to do with the engine, though I'm sure the 3.5 has better power as well.

heavier duty frame in the 3.5eb versus the 2.7, actually. And a higher curb weight overall.
