So, is the accidental tailgate opening ONLY in the models with a remote/electronic tailgate latch? My 2018 XL is supposedly part of the recall.
I've been holding off taking it to the dealer simply because 1) it is manual latch only and I have NEVER experienced the inadvertent open condition, and 2) I have a Leer cap which covers the tailgate lip.
It's essentially impossible for the tailgate to drop as long as the cap window is closed.

Bottom line...is this a mechanical or design failure of the latching mechanism? Or an electronic issue with wiring/power latch actuator?

Ask the dealer what parts are being replaced. In my case both the wiring harness and latches were faulty.

I am fairly certain it is only electronic lock models. And I think the fix is to disable the lock while the truck is running.

Default Electronic tailgate

My understanding is that it's the electronic tailgate. That's what the recall I received was all about.

My truck has had the "fix" done as a recall and I can still open it if the engine is running.
