tailgate opens by itself
Mine came loose on the right side. Walked around back of truck, thought was hit. Nope was out of the bracket.
got the gate down and slipped back in. ?? if suppose to have a bracket to keep from happening

Bought the truck in May 2020. Since then the gate has opened a number of times on its own.
The first few times it happened I blamed my daughter and wife for not closing it hard enough. However, while knowing I was the last to close it, today I know it was up when I left home because I used the backup camera when reversing out of my driveway. 7 minutes/3 miles later the guy behind me in line at Chick Fil A informed me the tailgate was open.
I also don’t notice when it comes down because I have a Truxedo roll up bed cover and a hydraulic tailgate assist installed. The gate just comes open and gently lowers with me never knowing it.
luckily, to my knowledge, I haven’t lost anything out of the back but it’s only a matter of time. Today for example my daughter’s lacrosse gear was barely hanging on when the dude behind me let me know. One more good turn and bye-bye goalie gear.
I came across this article but the local Ford dealership service tech told me it didn’t apply to my truck (verified the VIN). https://www.autotrader.ca/newsfeatur...opening-issue/
The truxedo cover requires the gate to be open before securing the cover and then you have to close the gate. I’m think that may be the issue?
Anyone else having this issue? I’m going to check the latches tonight to make sure they’re engaged properly but I’m open to other suggestions.

The tailgate has opened a few times on my 3019 King Ranch. One of the times it did this, I was towing a trailer, and the tailgate landed on the leveling crank handle. Tore the tailgate handle and backup camera assembly right off my truck!
it was replaced under warranty after I pointed out the manual states the truck allows the gate to open as long as you are doing less than 3mph. There's no reason we could come up with why anyone would want to do this. Park, or 0 mph only. Park, optimally.
the code needs to be changed by Ford, and they know it is wrong. Very frustrating.

I posted in this thread a few years ago because my tailgate kept opening by itself…or so I thought.
To refresh, I thought the tailgate was lowering by itself and since I have the aftermarket tailgate hydraulic assist installed, it wouldn’t make any noise when it lowered. And, since I have the toneau cover installed I could not see that the tailgate was down.
Figured it out a few years ago but forgot to circle back on this thread.
Turns out that when my wife and children were entering in the code on the drivers door, they would always enter the 5-digit code, plus the number 3 to unlock all the doors.
Well, come to find out they were also pressing “5” which would unlock the tailgate.
however, since I have a toneau cover on the bed, it would hold the tailgate in position long enough for me to back out of the driveway/parking spot.
Then, once I hit a bump hard enough to jar the tailgate lose from the toneau cover it would lower itself without me knowing it. But since I had the assist installed it wouldn’t make any noise.
Since we determined what the issue was all has been well. Until today.
it happened again and I wound up losing about $100 worth of lacrosse gear including my ball bucket with about 40 ***** ($2 each).
After expressing myself with a few choice words I started researching and found this video:
Essentially I am wiring up a switch on the tailgate and splicing into the wiring which currently triggers the “Door ajar” notification on the dash. This way, WHEN it happens again I’ll be notified.
I’ve ordered all the stuff and will be installing this next weekend.
I still think this should be, and always should have been a standard item on cars and trunks.

Ford finally issued a recall on the 2019 F150 tailgate opening issue. I got mine fixed about 6 months ago, and it has been working fine ever since.
Unfortunately, I was sarcastic with the dealer's service manager over his hesitancy to apply the recall, and he banned me from the repair shop! Then, a couple months later, he made my ex-wife cry by giving her a hard time over me when she brought her Escape in for some work. True piece of work...

2018 plat. Tailgate opened a number of times just after I bought it. Lucky my tools never fell out. Ford changed the actuator and that didn’t solve the issue. Next they changed the wiring harness which solved the problem.
Later I noticed the tailgate didn’t close in extreme cold weather. That was really annoying but then Ford changed out the latches on a FSA. It’s worked great ever since.
