Sync upgrade
I do not know, I leave my wifi on, seems I'm a few weeks behind others on updates. I have, and I recommend for you to go to the Ford site, download the latest version on a thumb drive, follow instructions.
You should expect it to take weeks. Your truck is not connected to your home WiFi 24/7... its electronics shut down about 30-40 minutes after you park the truck and turn it off. The truck probably doesn't get as strong/fast a signal as your devices inside the house. So you're downloading new software a small slice at a time. Then it typically needs 60-90 minutes or more of run time to install each update. If you want to go from your current version to the latest version fairly quickly, you'll need to download the updates to a USB drive. Be sure to follow the instructions to the letter, and don't interrupt any update until you get a persistent window on the screen that says it's complete and you can remove the USB drive. It will look and seem like it should be finished before then, but it's not. If you interrupt a USB drive update it has to restart from the beginning. The one advantage of WiFi updates is that downloads and installs will resume from the point at which they were interrupted.
You can speed up WiFi updates by connecting to hotspots other places where you frequently park... many gathering places like restaurants, barber shops, coffee shops, schools, parks, campgrounds, etc. have public WiFi to which you can connect.
I've begun turning my truck WiFi off between updates. There's no compelling reason for it to be connected. Ford always emails me when updates are available, and I normally install with a thumb drive anyway. After an update I leave the truck WiFi on for a couple weeks so it can report the update has been installed, and download any "cleanup" files.

don’t know what kind of thumb drive I need or anything else. Does it tell you what to do step by step on My Ford?
Yes, it gives very specific instructions including what sort of USB drive you need. Follow them step by step and you'll be fine. Or let the WiFi do it... you are correct that that's the easy method, no action required other than ensure the truck is connected to WiFi. Eventually it will catch you up to the current version.

still have to connect truck to WiFi?
The Ford owner support site. On the Sync download page, there is a set of instructions for the download. Part of the download package is another instruction sheet on how to accomplish the installation.
