You must try to drive a new truck without a subscription to Sync 4. I drove one for about a month for work... does not impress with so much more screen real estate.
I just used my phone for everything... navigation, satellite, etc.

Nope. It costs that much because a lot of work goes into a product with a very limited distribution. I'd guess a minority of owners update their maps past the couple of free updates that came with the new truck. Updating maps has nothing to do with Android Auto or accessing your music, which are Sync functions and always available.

On a macro scale, maps don't change much from year to year. You could go several years on a version and not notice any changes. The best value is probably to update the map once every 3-5 years. When we used paper maps and atlases we didn't buy a new one every year.
