Not sure if there is something i'm missing but when I use google maps on my phone half the time the directions are heard through the speakers and the other half not.

You are likely onlyi hearing the voice when playing music through your phone as an audio source like your music library or an app like pandora.

 

I thought that also may have been the case but the radio was on.

Complete Newbie here everything sync related how would one check for updates or apply said updates?

 

Ford made a lot of errors in the technology department. I have a 2016 f150 xlt 302A
and if I use Google maps or anything with audio on my phone the truck radio has to be on source "Bluetooth" for any audio.
My 2014 Taurus and 2011 Fiesta will play phone audio over Bluetooth no matter what is going on even over a CD.

FORD is the furthest behind any car manufacturer when it comes to technology in their vehicles. such as Ford still hasn't released android auto update to 2016, car play, or any other phone apps such as mirrorlink which is installed in all cellphones.

 

You'll want to make sure you have a registered SYNC account at www.owner.ford.com. The link I provided above will notify you if there's any updates available, as well as, provide you with the downloading and installation steps.

my andoid phone has google maps and nav and I have never heard it over truck audio only phone. I have an ord account and my sync updates are good. whats up.
