SYNC 3 Update
I struggled with this update, so I thought I would share the steps that finally got it to download the new update.
Login to Ford Website- Click on Owners- Under Technology tab select SYNC Support- (in Canada you get the message that you will be re-directed to another site, maybe same message elsewhere) Complete login information there, & will instruct you to download a file to your computer.
I downloaded the Zip File onto my computer. On Widows 10 there is an extract option, where I was able to extract files directly to the exFat formatted 32 GB USB.
Once the transfer was complete to USB, I went out started the truck, went into Settings- General- Turned off the automatic updates to be sure it wasn't trying to download by WiFi.
Still wasn't getting any message, but eventually when I started driving, I had a message display: "Updating System Software..."
In about 20 minutes I got a message saying updating was complete, & to remove the USB, & that it would update to newer version on next startup. I restarted a few times & checked but still wasn't updating.
I went back to the computer, & plugged in the USB, & sent the confirmation back to Ford that updating was complete.
The next time I started vehicle it was running version 3.
Good luck if you try to update. It doesn't appear to have updated the Nav Maps, I am still running NA 1 15, & noticed the newer models are on NA 1 16.

Your experience was identical to mine, and I also am still running the NA 1 15 after the update. Most reports on this forum say the maps are horribly out of date anyway. I cannot tell at this point, and haven't used it enough to know how accurate they are or aren't.
I agree. I could not tell any difference, except that up to that point, I could not receive texts for voice playback. After the update, that suddenly worked. I also prefer to keep software up to date, so I will continue to update it as long as they keep releasing them.
It's so when you go to the owners site it will show that you have the latest update. But it doesn't matter as the site will still show when an update is available.

Good that it worked for you, I've tried updating my 16 numerous times to no avail. Granted I Was doing it on a Mac, and apparently there are issues with extracting the zip from a Mac, I have a USB ready to go with an update downloaded and extracted from my windows 10 box, if that doesn't work, i'm calling ford tech support and requesting a warranty fix on the radio.
